Here in the SF Bay Area, it's Bike-to-Work Day. A blog on one of the
local e-rags had a nice call-out of the Betty Foy:

I use my Betty for commuting also. The step-through really helps when
I try to maneuver her around to hit crosswalk signals when needed (not
all our lights are "smart." I notice people are nicer to me when I
ride Betty and wear my Nutcase watermelon helmet. They're not as nice
when I ride my red RB-1 and grey Giro helmet.

VERY interesting observation on the helmet/bike niceness factor. Isn't there a study that documented cars giving casual (helmet-less) cyclists more space when they passed? This isn't a helmet-war, just interesting human observation!

I think anything that "humanizes" you helps. There have been a number of observations ( not sure they are actual "studies") that one of the contributing elements to driver-on-driver hostility is the anonymity of the interaction. As a cyclist, anything that undermines a driver from anonymizing you by wrapping you in a convenient stereotype will encourage them to treat you like a person. Helps a lot if the cyclist isn't acting like a jerk, too!

I notice a difference when I wear a skirt; both drivers and
pedestrians smile and are generally nicer. Also, since I've put a
front basket on my bike, I've actually had drivers give me the right-
of-way. Next, maybe streamers?!...

As long as you stop short of cards in the spokes... :)

I think I'll give a skirt a try. How about the rest of you guys?

As much as I think male cyclists are truly missing out by not wearing
fluttery skirts when they ride, it might not be the kind of attention
guys are looking for.
