Just putting the feelers out to see if any Portland area Riv-sters would be interested in a New Years Day ride. I don't necessarily have a specific route or destination to suggest. Just figured I'd see if there was interest and we could go from there.

I'd maybe be interested in a ride... if it's not raining. I'm having a hard time getting motivated to ride in the rain this winter. What type of ride are you talking about, a meander about town or something more ambitious like Dixie Mountain, weather permitting.

You bet, Smitty. If it's not pouring rain AND cold (I can handle either in isolation) I'm game.

I saw the Wheelmen and BTA rides. I have no objection to joining up with either of them, but they sound uninspiring. I ride on (and enjoy) neighborhood streets and MUPs in the city everyday. I was thinking/hoping for something more... gravel roads, vacant lots, farmland, flood control dikes, stairs, hobo paths through industrial areas, etc.

Something like Dixie Mtn would be a great way to kick off the new year if the sky cooperates. Some sort of "spirited ramble" closer to home might be more practical if the weather is less ideal.

My initial thoughts were 1) explore the west hills a bit (mostly new territory for me) with perhaps a stint through Forest Park. or 2) take the MAX out to Hillsboro or Gresham and ride around out in the country.

Let's give it a few days and see what the weather dictates.

Glad to hear that other's are interested.

I like these ideas although I'll say that the West Hills is probably
the most doable for me. Riding up to Pittock Mansion and then over to
Council Crest could be nice and then we could drop down towards
Multnomah Village.

Or we could go up to Pittock Mansion and then head along Skyline over
to Saltzman and drop into Forest Park which is sure to be muddy.

A Riv ride for later in the year out to Hillsboro by Max and maybe out
and around Hagg Lake might be nice. There's some great back roads out
that way.

Well kids, The weather forecast for Jan 1 is looking pretty good, so I say we should do a PDX Riv ride. Here's what I have in mind...

New Year's Day Taco Ride!

Going off of Leaf "Mike" Slayer's suggestion... meet downtown, ride up to Pittock Mansion, across Skyline to Forest Park, and down to cross the St Johns Bridge. It should have a nice combination of stairs, steep climbs, fast descents, gravel, and mud. Then the whole thing winds up at the taqueria and mexican bakery/grocery in St Johns (I really hope they're open on New Years Day).

Meet on the Willamette River Greenway Trail in front of (or perhaps it's behind) the Mistral Building (think NW 9th & Naito Pkwy but closer to the water... map here) There are some benches and a little hang-out area right by the river... that's the place.

Roll out at 11am... show up before that.

Even though the ride officially ends in St Johns, I'll be riding home towards the Woodstock neighborhood if anyone wants to head that way too... after eating tacos of course.

This is NOT a loop, but if any out-of-towners drive to the start and aren't sure exactly how to get back to their car, I'll ride back to the start with you... after eating tacos of course.

Also, In any of you NoPo folks are familiar with the Santa Cruz Taqueria/Panaderia on Lombard St and can swing by and confirm if they'll be open on Jan 1, that would be cool. I'm going on the assumption that they'll be open, but am not sure.

Lastly, I'm inviting a couple non-Riv friends. You should do the same.

This sounds like a good idea. I got the hall pass from my wife and can meet anywhere. I'm working the next two days so can't check on the tacos.

I got confirmation that the taco joint will be open on New Year's Day. The dining room is out of sight of the bikes, so a lock might be useful if you want to stop for tacos.

I plan to wear my wooly warm tweed sweater vest if anyone wants to be matchy-match.

See whoever tomorrow 11am at the benches on the Willamette River Greenway Trail near NW 9th & Naito Pkwy. Here.

Well, since the taco stand will be open... I'm in!  I won't be riding a Riv, but I'll be MUSA'd up.

Pictures won't be a problem Manny, but why in the world would you want a taco from OR when you live in CA? How about some fried chicken on a waffle from the Cackalack's Chicken Shack (cart)?

Sorry, I ate all my tacos. But I did save a few pictures for those that could be there only in spirit.

The ride leader, among a couple others, had a camera as well; so there should be a few more trickling in. Don't touch that dial. :-)

What a great ride. That was so much fun. And the weather was amazing. Let's all do it again, and soon!

Here's my pictures. They're not great and don't include any glamor shots of the bikes but they hopefully convey the spirit of the ride.

13 folks showed up for the ride today. 6 on Rivendells. Good times ensued. Plenty of stairs, steep hills, spectacular views, and cool refreshing air.

Pics from the Smitty cam (no taco pics but there's one of a burrito towards the end)

Here you go: a pollo, an asada, and two carnitas.

Next time will try to give more notice, Ron. This was sort of last minute waiting to see what the sky was going to do. Except for a few grumbles on the stairs :-), everyone had a blast. There was talk of doing another ride in the next couple months. Perhaps a less urban route... Hagg Lk and Dixie Mtn were mentioned as possibilities.
