Hi, folks. Dustin and I made it back to San Diego last night from out
Central Coast tour. Jim joined us camping during out last night in
Buellton and rode over Refugio pass to Santa Barbara, where we caught
the train. Mike S. made the best itinerary!

Here's plenty more, featuring my Protovelo, Dustin's Kirk, and Jim's
newly-painted Atlantis:

It was a great time taking Refugio Road from Buellton to Santa Barbara, and as usual, the company was excellent.

Dustin and Esteban were cycling machines.

I'm still traveling for a week with no computer so my photo uploads will be delayed a bit. But I'll report on that day (I was only on the last day of the tour) and a neat little Amtrak-trick I learned.

Thanks Mike for all the route planning, and to Doug, Mike, Chris, and Tim for the Refugio advice and info.

-Jim W.

So, you have listed that your route from Half Moon Bay to New Brighton
(where I hope you did not omit a trip to Gayle's) was 56 miles and
included a diversion into Big Basin. What route did you take, and how
did you manage to take a 68 mile direct route, add some diversions and
get 56 miles?

I'll take it if its 68 miles... and that's not including Big Basin
diversion. We just went off Mike's initial estimates, and neither of
us had a computer.

We'll take it. If Gayle's is a greasy spoon place in Athos, we hit
it.. if its in Capitola we missed it.

Where was the Big Basin diversion? And what kind of shape was it in?

Gayle's is a bakery & deli strategically located two miles north of
New Brighton State Beach, close enough so you can ride over and set up
at the campground, go to Gayles for dinner, then go back the next
morning for breakfast & pick up some sandwiches and treats for lunch--
something I have only done twice. Twice in the last two weeks, I mean.
Gayle's superb deliciousness makes it a worthwhile day trip for me
too: eighty or ninety miles round trip is nugatory to get to this
temple of culinary delights. The boysenberry turnovers are
magnificent, and the breakfast burrito with bacon and potatoes goes
well with latte for breakfast. OK, I have to admit that I've ever
eaten there was wonderful, and I intend to continue my research at
every opportunity.

Excellent! Looks like a great trip. I just skimmed the pictures and
blog post as I'm at work but am looking forward to looking over both
at a more leisurely pace tonight when I'm home.

I'm counting the days until me and my friend Dylan head out for a 9
day tour here in the Pacific NW.

my mileage estimates were from cycling guides and Google maps bike route function... basically a rough idea.

I've always wanted to some cycling in the Big Basin area. It looks like some beautiful terrain to ride in. ( yes I'm tired of the arid chaparral flora our local rides encounter) Maybe one year I'll get up there and do a loop trip in the Santa Lucia range. From what I've seen there is some fantastic mixed terrain riding to be had.

There's a terrific dirt road, Gazos Creek, from the coast all the way
to the Park Headquarters in the eponymous big basin.

It was 64.2 miles, to be exact:

I’ll have a blog report with some pics in the next couple of days.
