I just put my (vaguely Riv-ish) bike and camping/touring stuff on a train, with plans to retrieve it in a week at the Amtrak station on Oakland. From there, I have about 10 days of no plans but to ride and explore and camp and hopefully befriend some like-minded locals. I'll stop by RBWHQ, of course, if I manage to work around Riv's holiday schedule.

Jealous.   Extremely jealous.

Have a GREAT trip.

I am packing up a Riv and heading south (home) to FL for the holiday week. Family and friends not seen there for a couple of years and I already have a couple of "Let's ride" invites to catch up on.

Sounds like a good trip in the making.  Northern Cali had been wetter than normal a while there but things seem to be drying out.  Their deep winter temps are us Midwesterners mild riding weather.

Hey Jim

Let us know when you'll be around, holiday time will be hectic but
if'n I'm available I'd be more than happy to show you round 'Nut
Creek. Same offer extends to all travelers - just requires a heads-up.

Happy holidays to all!

Me too. I won't be camping, but I'd be happy to show you around Diablo
if it's not too muddy. Or hang out and drink beer if it is too muddy.

Thanks Joe and Jim. Luckily I'm bringing my best mud bike, so hopefully I'll be able to ride a little while I'm out there. Looking at Manny's recent group of photos has me eager to get to WC! Plus I just got my Mount Diablo trail map in the mail today.

Cool. This smells like a mix terrain ride toward diablo. I hear there's  Green Ranch somewhere beyond Diablo.

If you all plan a ride earlyish in the day on the 28th I'm game.

Hope to meet some of you then.

I ought to be available next week and would do my best to join up! I could probably recruit a Riv-riders, though I'll probably leave the fixed gear Quickbeam at home. It needs a break from the commute.

Best wishes to you RBWers,

Maybe we need to do multiple rides: Mt Diablo and Mt Tam. January 1st
is a traditional day for cyclists to climb Mt Diablo.

Let's plan it: Mt Diablo ride on NYD. Maybe Grant and some of the other Riv folk will join. One of you locals should fill in the details of where and when. This is gonna be great.

I would be up for a Diablo ride on New Year's Day. Or any Mt. Tam adventures.

Hmmm. Need to test the ankle and make sure it is ready. Maybe it won't rain this weekend.

Jim,

Based on the fact that you said you're bringing your best mud bike, I can only conclude that you've elected to bring the Pugsley on the trip to the Bay Area? If so, that's an interesting choice to be certain. Or do you consider one of your other bikes to be better in the mud than the Pug?

I would have brought the Pug, but I figured that would be a theft target and not well suited to public transit. I brought my disc trucker with Rohloff, which looks unremarkable/ugly and has a more or less mud-proof drivetrain and braking system..

Hey there Mr Thill!

Glad to hear you'll be landing in the Bay Area!  I'm north-bay-centric, so when you head into Marin County, lemme know!   We're dealing with a dying family member right now, so I can't commit too far out, but should be in the area with some flexibility in schedule.

It was 30 degrees at 8 this morning in Walnut Creek, and 15 higher up
on Mt Diablo. I suggest starting at 10 am to give folks some time to
gather and for it to warm up a bit, but maybe 9 am would work too. RBW
will be closed, so meeting at BART might make the most sense. Pleasant
Hill BART is more bike friendly than Walnut Creek BART, and it's
adjacent to a MUP that can take us to the foot of the mountain with
minimal traffic.

Snow is forecast for the top of Diablo this weekend. I don't know the
forecast for Jan 1st yet, but you might bring tire chains just in
case.

Let's split the difference and say 9:30.  That way we can warm up and considering its following New Year's Eve, maybe some whisky would be in order in the am.  Anyway - Pleasant Hill BART station?

Sounds great! We should plan a Marin ride also; maybe a Mt Tam climb?

Weather update: 52 degrees this morning, many clouds and heavy rain
forecast. Unsettled weather next week but looks like it may dry up for
New Year's.

Sounds great. Would that MUP be the Contra Costa Canal Trail to Lime
Ridge open space? Or the Iron Horse down past RBW and cut over to
Shell Ridge? Or ...?

Well, I'd suggest Iron Horse to Canal Trail, and then cut through
Heather Farms Park and the Rancho San Miguel neighborhood to North
Gate Rd. Not only does it avoid traffic, it also gives you a glimpse
at one of the first modernist, Usonian-inspired sub-divisions.

Jim:

You're too far north for "fun in the sun". You need to be in Orange
or San Diego county :). Here in CA you can always tell where people
live based on whether or not their bikes have fenders (Esteban is the
outlier here; he just likes fenders).

Hey, howabout fenders in Southern New Mexico?

They dress up Ms. Giselle Bleriot, makes her look twice as classy (Woody's mahogany & oak).
When we do get some rain (an event to be celebrated), there are few things so intoxicating as a ride through the desert, standing water everywhere, the chamisa and creosote bush sending forth a heady perfume, fenders earning their keep, keepin' Giselle and Marcos clean, dry, happy, and lookin' swell!

Marc en Las Cruces, NM
