Never thought I'd ever think of selling a Rivendell but with my third son in college and plenty of bills in the mailbox, I'm thinking that one must go. I just don't know which one. I have a four year old Atlantis which is set up as a touring/rando bike and a Hunqapillar which is my go anywhere bike. The Atlantis has noodle bars, 700*40 marathon supremes and is very comfortable. The Hunq has bullmoose bars and 700*50 duremes. It's a little sluggish on long rides but is great for trails and shorter rides. Is also very comfortable and is less than a year old.
Typically I ride them on a 28 mile commute, up to 50 mile loops, around town on errands and someday, trail rides and I hope to ride a long tour. I love both the bikes and really don't which one to part with. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.  Bill
PS- I hope Manny "one bike is enough" Acosta is right.

I say keep the Atlantis. It's a fantastic, proven, versatile and
classic bike. But really, considering how costly Rivs are and that
they are only going to go up in price, do what you can to cut cost
elsewhere.

I would say that if you ride these bikes and enjoy them and they both are different enough that the purposes don't overlap too much, try to find some money someplace else. (I am currently contemplating another Riv bike purchase)

If you are stuck on selling them, I would keep the Atlantis. It is just such a cool bike.

They kinda duplicate each other, so I say pick the color/decals/headbadge/name you like best, and send the other to a grateful new owner.

Do you still have both kidneys?   :)   But seriously I would echo Mike's suggestion of really trying hard to cut costs elsewhere.    Both are versatile bikes but if you set them up differently they can really complement each other, and having a spare can be crucial in the event of a temporary service interruption (broken cable or chain, stuff wearing out while you weren't looking, or other unforeseen mechanical gremlin).

Keep in mind too that Grant has said in the past that he does not plan for Riv to continue after he retires, so Rivs may become much harder to find some years down the road. (Not suggesting you retire early or anything, G.P.)  I agree that they are worth holding onto if you can.

If you still need to sell one, keep the one that will do more of what you love to do. For the long tour idea, Atlantis would be my suggestion. It goes off paved road too just fine.

Oh no! We need a plan! Or Grant can't retire!

If XO-1s now command exotic prices, think of what a clean Atlantis
frame will bring in, say, 2025.

To the question: I'd say, sell only if (1) you are financially
desperate, or (2) you don't like the frame. But if you flout these
conditions, I'd say keep the Atlantis.

Riv won't continue? That's not what Grant told me some years ago. He said he was hoping to pass it on to some young employee.

Whawhawhazzat?  I thought Grant wanted to pass the company onto his employees????  I seriously hope riv continues after grant retires.

Atlantis.  The bike I regret selling most.  And I've sold a lot.

Just recalling what I read in one of his columns some years back. Things could change of course, as bike models certainly do.

Being an Atlantis owner makes me somewhat biased in that direction.  However, either one can function for your purposes, and it sounds like you have each set up so they don't overlap too much.  My Atlantis is also set up with 40 mm Marathon Supremes and I don't hesitate to take it off road.  If you can only keep one, I'm voting for the Atlantis.

With the Hunq being newer, it may command a better price.  BUT even a year old Rivendell will have lost some value.  I'm in the "cut costs elsewhere" camp.  Ask yourself  "At today's costs for college, how much will the bike buy?".  OTH, maybe there's money leaking out in little dribs'n'dabs that don't seem like much but add up to a hefty sum over time.

BTW, Manny is right: Rivendells are so versatile some of us manage to get by with only one.  While I have 2 other bikes, they are both from the 80s and have long since earned a quiet retirement.  The Atlantis is my ride 99% of the time.

As a non-Atlantis owner, and non-Hunqowner, I'd say keep the Atlantis. (If you really do sell one of them).

Sounds like you are saying it is more comfy and faster to ride for you. Go with the comfort and ease. That paint on the Atlantis is tops, too.

Thanks for all the replies. I've given the replies some thought and will try to cut costs elsewhere. Already have a plan.  I realize that if I sell one, the chances of someday replacing it is slim. I would have most likely sold the Hunqapillar but every time I ride it, I realize what a fun bike it is.  I'm keepin' both.  Bill

Great news to hear a Riv is being kept.  The secret is to consider selling it, and consider it so seriously, that when you decide not to sell it, it feels like you just "bought" yourself a Rivendell!

Hey All,
I know this won't come as anything new to people here, but I personally have never sold a frame or a bike I didn't miss. To sell either an Atlantis or a Hunq has got to hurt.

I own neither, but do own (or have owned) similar bikes and I would sell the Hunq. Then I would make the Altlantis do everything....including perhaps the ability to swap out entire (at least bars and controls) in a hurry and except the limitations. My 2 cents.
