So...I have my bride's blessing to get a Hunq. Yay! I'm 5'10.5" tall
and I've measured my PBH with the Riv paint sticks method and get an
87. Both Grant and Keven say go with the 58 Hunq for sure. I KNOW that
should be the last word, end all. But, the Hunq page size
recommendations and the geo charts put me on the fence, ie I can't
help but wonder if I'd be more comfortable on the 54. I don't care if
I don't have 2" of standover, but I also don't want my PH strained
over the bike when I stand flat footed. I tend to wear shoes that
aren't going to add a lot of height. I don't think I'd ever want/need
to run the biggest tires the Hunq will handle, but it'd be nice to
know I could do Big Apple 50's with no worries. So...is anyone out
there with a comparable PBH who can put my mind at ease on the 58
Hunq, or otherwise say that I needn't fear the "Big Riv" sizing?
Thanks in advance, looking forward to sharing pics of my (hopefully 58
- I like the diagatube) Hunq.

If you go with the smaller frame, it will be tougher to get the bars
up high enough and, even if you do, the cockpit length may end up too
short.

Consider which bars you plan to use. If it is BullMoose, definitely
get the larger frame because the quill on the BullMoose is rather
short.

I have virtually identical height and PBH measurements to you.  I ride a 56 Bombadil (among other things).  I put a deposit on a 54 Hunq when they were pre-order.  When the prototypes came in I rode them both and enthusiastically preferred the 58.  It looked right from a seat-post-exposure perspective as well (and I'm not one of these fistfull of seatpost dudes either).  As you did, I decided that I was on the fence, between those two sizes, either would work, but neither would be "perfect".  If they made a 56 I would have probably chosen that.  What I concluded was that my 56 Bombadil was (and is) perfect, and I built a drop-bar cockpit for that instead of buying a Hunqapillar.  I still want an uber fat tire 700c bike someday, and when I finally act on that urge I will buy a 58 Atlantis.

Also, be sure that super-high handlebars are what you really want. I know that there are Rivendell enthusiasts who love the bikes AND keep their ideal setup with the bars kinda low. I didn't used to be one of those, but now I am. I am absolutely convinced that for me, the best riding position that does not hurt my midback and subsequently my neck is with bars lower than how I used to do it. My bars are now 3-4 cm below the saddle-top.

Some of this is a function of being tall with long arms.

I have a 60 cm Hillborne with drop bars as described above, and technomic deluxe stem with only 3.5 cm of quill coming out of the headset. I am just shy of 6'4" with PBH of 92.5 cm.

If I were to get a Hunqapillar, the 62 cm one would require that I have about 1.5 cm of quill coming out of the headset to get the bar as low as I need it to be, and maybe even less since the Hunq has a lower BB drop than Hillborne. However, if I had a 58 with the same drop bars, I'd raise the quill so that about 5.5 cm (or less) of it sticks out of the headtube. This means that I would have a very reasonable setup with a technomic deluxe stem on a 58 cm Hunqapillar. I get the feeling from this that the 62 cm would be a bit too big for me, even though 1.5 cm of quill coming out the headset can theoretically work. (Also, the above comparison of Hunq to Sam Hillborne works because both bikes have the same toptube upslope angle.)

But don't use my experience as yours. All I'm saying is to make sure that high bars are what you absolutely want. I don't want them that high, and I would end up more inclined to steer towards the lower size to fit my needs that don't match Grant's high handlebar assumptions.

I'm 5'11" and have plenty of clearance with my 58 Hunqapillar. You won't go wrong on that size.

Forgot to add that I'm now running 50mm Duremes. The 60 Big Apples were not a good fit and would rub. If you're going to run 40 or 50mm tires, the 58 should fit well.

I was in a similar "between sizes" type predicament for an AHH. 2 Riv employees suggested I go small and 2 other Riv employees suggested I go large. I posted the Q on the list here as well as speaking to a few Riv owners around town. The general consensus was to go small. Regardless, I was planning to go large. At the last second I decided to order the smaller size. Now that I've been riding the bike for a few months I believe I made the better choice. But I also believe that going large would not have been the wrong choice... it just would have had different pros and cons.

Something to consider... and I've only figured this out recently... I've had more bike-fit/comfort issues related to TT length than stand over height.

Another way to get to the bottom of this would be to go to Walnut Creek for a test ride.

Good luck.

I'm in the process of building my hunq so I have yet to ride it. When I ordered it I spoke with Grant who recommended the 54. I'm now a little concerned because I'm 5'11 with a pbh of 87. I'm building it with bullmoose bars and 700*50 duremes. I'll have a better idea if it's the right fit in a couple of months.

Interesting info... I decided not to get a Hunqu because I wanted the double top tube  and all the info said I should get a 54 with no diagonal TT. ( I'm 5'11.5 & 86.5 pbh)

This changes things... hmmm now I need to re-think this.

I'm 5'9.5" with an 84cm pbh.  I have a 54 Hunqapillar and think it's pretty much a perfect fit.

If I was 5'11" or taller, with a pbh of 86cm or more, I would definitely have gone for the 58 Hunqapillar.

Another data point for you:

I am 5'11", PBH 86-87.
I ride a 56 Sam which fits me very well, but I wouldn't want the
standoverany higher.
If I was looking for a Hunq I would need to ride one first, which you
may not be easily able to do.
That's probably not very helpful, sorry.

Thanks, this is a great frame of reference. Sounds like I need to get
the 58 ordered.

I'm roughly the same height and PBH as you (5'11", PBH = 87.5cm) and rode both bikes when I was there this summer.  I thought they both felt good, but I subjectively liked the 54cm bike with moustache setup (other one had noodles) better.  My intended purpose was for an all-road/mtb type bike, and the 54 was plenty big for that.  The 58cm was good, but I was jaded by the long reach to the drops that this particular setup had.  Not as much throw-aroun-ability, if you know what I mean.

Both bikes work for someone our size.  If you have shorter arms or want more "clearance" for off-road use, get the 54cm.  If you want a comfy road bike or tourer, and you are comfortable getting bars that work back more if necessary, get the 58cm.

I agree with Brian that the 58 Hunqa demo bike @ RBW with drop bars isn't a good fit. Even Keven didn't like it. However, put Bullmoose bats and it becomes a whole new bike. I got mine with 200mm BM bars and thought the reach was a bit too far. For a while the 150mm weren't in stock but when they finally came in, I got a set to try and compare. Now that I've tried both, it seems that while the reach of the 150 is slightly better for slower riding, they are a bit lower and since they are closer to or on the line of the steerer tube, I lose the leverage the 200 provide that make them fantastic to, as Brian stated, "throw the bike around".

I've put the 200 back to test them again and I think I'm leaning towards keeping them on the 58 Hunqapillar.

Now I'm playing with the 150 on the 58 Betty that my daughters still haven't ridden. They're home from Berkeley for a week so I'll have to see if they give it a try. In my patio, the 150 Bullmoose on the 58 Betty which is on the small side for me seem like a winning combo for upright agile handling. Will do some riding tomorrow to confirm...

To summarize, for the OP, I recommend the 58 Hunqapillar with either 150 or 200 Bullmoose bars. If he wants drops, then the 54 might fit better as long as he's fine with the lower maximum handlebar height unless he has very long arms.

I'm 5'11" and also have an 87 PBH, and Rich strongly recommended that I get the 54. I love it, though I'm pretty sure I could have set up a 58 so I'd love that, too. Do you know what kind of bars you plan to use? If you want to use Albatross bars or something like that, I'd go for the 58. With drop bars, maybe lean towards the 54. Here are some pictures of my bike, so you can get an idea of what your saddle and bar height might look like on a 54:

There are pictures there of the bike with noodles and with mustache bars. I've settled on the noodles with a 10cm dirt drop stem.

I would follow their recommendations. I would be riding a larger if
my legs would grow. I've been riding a 54 all year but I have an
85pbh(after raising my voice an octave). That's complicated by the fact
that I'm 6' tall. I used drops and a regular stem (rather than the
recommended dirt drop) to compensate. Take a look

http://simplecycle-marc.blogspot.com/2011/10/re-review-hunq.html?m=0

You'd have your seat even higher. I would definitely have gone bigger
if I could, but just couldn't stretch my legs.
All that being said, it's by far the most comfortable bike I've ever
ridden. I love my Hunq, order now before she changes her mind!

Thanks again -what a helpful group. I should have mentioned in my
original post that I intend to go with Albatross bars. This sounds
like another vote for the 58 as long as I'm not using drop bars; I
don't think there have been any standover-related contraindications so
far. Love those pics of your bike in the snow, btw.

I'm with Jim regarding lower bars. With a slightly smaller frame, you
can always quill-up. But you can't quill-down. So, if you can get the
bars where you want 'em on the 58, and if the effective top tube is
normal for you, and if it still gives you enough clearance for off-
road shenanigans, then get it.

Well, I didn't actually have much choice in the matter when I ordered
my Hunqapillar. The 48cm was the ONLY one that stood a chance of
fitting, and it seemed to me to be a little big. I set up one of my
other bikes at the same standover ... and it made me a little nervous.
THe top tube on the 48 is also a little longer than my other bikes.
However, after talking with Keven, it sounded like it would be fine,
so I placed the order for a 48 with Albatross bars and a 12cm tech
deluxe stem. I am VERY happy about the fit, and wouldn't wish for
anything smaller. It rides great and fits perfectly ... so I would say
don't even worry about the bigger size, especially with Albatross
bars. Pics of my bike are here:

Best wishes for your new bike!
