I hear by open up the table for the first annual (hopefully) Rivendell Rally Bay Area Edition. I know it's kind of late but with school just ending this was the last thing that crossed my mind. But I digress, Mr.Grant PetersEn is book signing/reading near the Warming Hut under the Golden Gate Bridge. The signing/reading starts around 1pm. I'm opened for anything S240 Saturday>Sunday, bike ride before or after? We can't have all the MidWest coast guys have all the fun! Lets hope we can get a good turn out since this is a hop and skip from Rivendell HQ.

Hey Manny,
Send me a link or something to ... your source of info. My schedule
mentions something at the Park, but doesn't say any more---no time, no
agenda or anything. I'll be where I gotta when I hafta...no
problem...but tell me what you know. PM is fine.

What a great idea! Unfortunately my son has Water Polo practice on Sunday at that time, so I won't be able to make it to the reading.

Sounds good. I should be able to make it for a ride afterward, unless I'm forgetting something that my better half will remind me of. I'm envisioning some mixed terrain over the bridge, or maybe an urban explore in SF?

My folks are coming into town, so I'm out.  That said, I think you could do a hiker/biker site at Samuel P Taylor Saturday night, since you are now a pro at getting to and from there safely from the GG Bridge

I would be up for rides both before and after the reading. A ride to
Fred's in Sausalito beforehand sounds great. Perhaps we could ride
around the Presidio afterward.

Looks like the probably of two ride it is.
Morning ride to Fred's for french toast.

Afternoon ride after the book signing.

As much as I would love to do both. I feel like some quality time with the lady friend is much needed. So might be out for the morning ride. More likely be able to do the afternoon ride after the book signing.

I propose a mixed trail route in Rivendellish fashion over the bridge up Mt.Tam via climbing Rail Road Grade to the West
Point Inn, descent to Panoramic Hwy on Old Stage coach, ride Panoramic Hwy to the Miwok trail head, ride the headlands back to Conzelman and then down to the Bridge. I did this ride with some of the SF Randonneurs a couple weeks back. Route can be found here. I pretty sure the route sheet is the one I described.

Let me know what everyone thinks. We can cut the ride shorter or make it longer. Or changed all together.

I'd like to join in, meet you all and go for a ride. I'll probably
bring a couple friends along. Pretty much any time/day is good for us.
Overnight's work also.

Shorter route. Less dirt more urban. 25ish miles. see the best of the city.

Any thoughts?

I like the mixed terrain route through Marin. I'm concerned that given some of us need to get to San Francisco via BART and the very first train arrives at Embarcadero just after 8:30 - that we will not get to Fred's in Sausalito before 9am. If we assume breakfast takes an hour, this leaves three hours to ride 50 miles over hill and dale. That would require a pretty intense pace.

I like the San Francisco route as well - but it seems more suited to the afternoon ride.

Perhaps we could trim the route in Marin a little bit?

My 2 cents.

That sounds fun. I can make an afternoon ride tomorrow. Anywhere is
fine with me, even 25 laps around Crissy Fields. I will wear my good
shirt!

Agreed Corwin. Unfortunately I won't be able to make any morning rides that Sunday morning. I'm more than happy to host any afternoon rides after the book signing. This is why the interweb does really work out for these kind of meetings. I guess we'll decide as a group after the ride. Looking forward to riding with you all.

I think I'll just meet for the afternoon ride then. Looks like that's
what the group is leaning towards. Where is the meetup spot?

We'll gather together after the book signing. If you see a group of rivendellish bikes together go with those guys.

Figured this needed a flyer.

Feel free to post this around.
I figure it would be pompous of me to include the ride afterwards in the flyer since I didn't really ask permission to do a ride.

I'm planning on joining the ride after the signing and am throwing a
vote in for Marin but am up for anything. I'll just be in the bay area
for the summer, so a group ride will be great. Thanks for getting this
together.

Some included dirt sounds needed and the
both of the two routes Manny posted look like a lot of fun.

See you all tomorrow.

My little brother says I lack flyer making skills. He told me he could make a better one.

While I agree that this is a better flyer, the typo is just right. I'm not happy with the photo.

Fun day.
Grant's book signing at the Warming Hut was greeted by amazing weather and amazing bikes with amazing people. Glad I got to drag Grant along on this trip. It's kinda hard to plan a ride like this for people I don't know. So I figured I would just do a ride and if people wanted to follow that would be great. I already knew I didn't want to ride Tam that day. Despite the nice weather along the coast I knew riding more inland it would get uncomfortable or even down right miserable. At any point no ride should be like that. Unless you want it to be. And for this nice day with these great people it didn't seem like it was really necessary to go on a epic river crossing ride. (not like there is any epic river crossing around San Francisco) or dry dirt hill climbing. Opt for a tourist route of seeing the best of San Francisco. Riding over the bridge>into Marin Headlands> By some beach>Up some hill with bunkers> back over the bridge. Most of the route was kinda made up on the spot. Thanks for everyone that followed me (err dealt with my lack of route making skills). After we got over the bridge some people branched off to do their own thing including Grant himself. Kinda made me nervous about him getting back to Bart when he asked the question, "I can get to Bart by going this way right?" I'm pretty sure he made it to Bart. The ride continued passed the bridge> pass Robin William's house> pass the Legion of Honor>  down some stairs> pass Ocean's Beach> into Golden Gate Park. Here the ride finished with Ice cream in the park. Fun ride amazing people, great looking day. Thanks to everyone that came out. Oh yea thanks to Grant for make a book about bike riding, then having a book signing for the book about bike riding, then coming along for the bike ride after the book signing for his book about bike riding.

Pictures proved that it happened:
