While summer has been buzy. I've been itching to doing something
outside. Decided out the blue to pack up and head to Mt.Diablo for a
quick S240. Since most people I know actually have this thing called
"work", had to go solo. While I was around I stopped by the shop to
drop off and pick up a few things. Surprisingly it was Grant's
birthday and there was bbq at the shop. Beautifully BBQ bacon wrapped
trout, totally paleo btw. Dropped off a home-made hammock chair for
Grant and some facebook badges for Harry plus got to picked up some
great looking glasses.
Without any real destination I was hoping just to get lost somewhere
on Mt.Diablo. After a couple of hours of climbing/walking I pitched up
the hammock and went hiking around the area. Thats when the fog rolled
in. Apparently I didn't climb high enough and got caught in the night
fog for the whole night. Being to lazy I figured I'd be okay for the
night. I was quite wrong. Around 2 am drench by the dew, I had to find
shelter behind a rock for the rest of the night. Waking wet to the
bone is an interesting feeling. Lesson learn. Hammock is good only in
summerish weather. Still pretty good trip.

Pictures proved it happened:

P.S.
On my way down from Mt.Diablo my rear derailuer broke and I had to
jury-rig it into a single speed to get back to the shop. Got it
replaced.

manny

how's that black carradice bag treating you? looks like its still
going strong.

your s240 looked awesome! i still haven't gone on one yet, want to do
another one this summer? i'm actually going to be house/dogsitting for
my friend in WC from 8/12-8/23. i'm determined to do at least one s240
on diablo and maybe another one somewhere else, maybe angel island or
in the east bay somewhere. if you or anyone else is interested in
teaching this newbie some bike camping tips during that time period,
let me know!

Looks good Manny.  The fog rolling in has been pretty un-summerish, hasn't it?  I'd be down for a short-notice S24O.  That doesn't mean I'll get permission from the family unit, but my overnight bike kit can deploy rapidly.  I'm useful around the campsite for amusement because I know several really corny Filipino jokes.

@Rob
The carradice bag has worked out pretty well! I've had it about
threeish years and it's still holding up strong despite the abused
I've taken it through. I need to rewax the bag soon.

@William
I might be planning one in the near future. Maybe even this Friday up
to Hawk Camp in the Marin Headlands. I have to be back early Saturday
because I have work at 1 pm. If there's enough people interested I
might just force myself to go. Others wise something next week for
sure.

I'd be interested in the Hawk Camp trip, if you we willing to vary the
ages and genders of participants.

I've got Cal Shakespeare in Orinda Friday night and a 200k brevet Saturday morning, so I'm out this weekend, but I love the idea of posting S24O meet-ups here on the list!  Thanks!

The super-easy S24O that I intend to do this summer is a work-commute-S24O.  Evening ride from El Cerrito to Anthony Chabot on Redwood Road.  Camp in a walk-in site.  Get up in the morning and head to work through Castro Valley to South Hayward.

Manny,

Great trip, looks like a successful S240. Did you take the trails up
to the top? Allot of hiking and Biking if you did. I did a similar
trip in January when the weather was so nice.

We should facilitate a small group S240 if anyone is interested.

Cheers!

i'm always down for a hawk camp trip with some new friends. i'm in SF.
lets do it!

btw, manny, i'm curious about camping on mt. diablo. are the rangers
strict about where you sleep? can you just set up anywhere? have a
fire anywhere, etc? Also, about the fog, if you climb higher, is there
no fog at night? Lots of questions...

thanks!

@eli
Camping at Mt.Diablo should only be done at the campsites there. Fires
should only in designated fire pits. And there was a lot of fog when I
was there. But not at Juniper. There was so much fog that the dew felt
like it was raining. In the middle of the night I had to retreat out
of my hammock and hide behind a rock.
