I'm riding my Saluki this weekend and traveling with buddies on a Bleriot and a Butternut AHH (as well as a 10 year old on his Surly LHT). A few years ago while riding in a similarly-festooned bags-on-bikes-filled-with-stuff-one-needs formation, a racery-type rode by and commented "you guys look like you're running away from home". I knew then we had it right. Hope to see some of you on the road or overnight in Centralia.

ahaha.  That is the best quotation I have heard in a long time.  Good stuff.

Running away from home is pretty accurate for some rides isn't it.  A couple of roadies passing me up Mt Hamilton asked if I had packed a picnic in my handlebar bag.  I pretty much had.  I stopped at the summit, and laid out my lunch on a bandanna.  It was kind of a picnic!

Man.  Love it.

"Did you pack a picnic in your handlebar bag?"
"Why yes, yes indeed."

Good stuff.

It was actually more like:

Roadie:  "Dude, what do you have in there?  Did you pack a picnic or something?"

Me:  "Yes, among other things"

How could one go for a ride and not pack a picnic?

While I hadn't considered the question in those terms, I do have a sack each of my wife's oatmeal, raisin, flax, and walnut cookies and her almond and orange biscotti onboard, even though the ride provides ridiculous amounts of free food. While completely unnecessary on one hand, they're absolutely necessary on the other.

I believe I've brought enough for everyone.

Unfortunately I won't be hearing "On your left, Birkenstocks" this
year. Have a great time!

Ha! I remember that: an SIR jersey and full-on Birks.  Sorry to miss you this year.

The weather looks clear so I'm going fenderless. I'll be the guy on a
40 year old chrome Paramount, acorn saddle bag, and wearing black
Adidas soccer shoes...shouldn't be too many of us. My brother and I
are staying in Winlock but if we see you on the road I'll give a Riv
shout out.

Rob:

Best of luck on STP! You rode the Seattle-to-Centralia portion of the route in reverse in 2009 during Wheels North -- wish I could be there this weekend to ride with you again.

Don't go by too fast Rob, I've always wanted to see that bike of yours (other than on Flickr).  We'll keep out eyes peeled. Have a great ride.

Hey Frank,

Cool to hear your ten-year-old is doing the ride this year! Impressive.

I bailed on the STP this year. Not enough time to train--my longest ride so far this year has been the ~25 miles of the Riv Ride New Year's Day! Ah well. Next year!

Have an awesome rest of the ride.

Hi All,
Had a great weekend of riding. Weather was perfect...70 degrees,
clear skys, and mild tailwinds! Felt great, no mechanical issues,
lots of fun. I think I might have seen one orange Hillborne (it was a
pretty orange but I was passing and couldn't be certain) but that was
it as far as Rivendell were concerned. I rode my 71 Paramount and I
was somewhat of a freak among the masses of modern bikes. Of course
with ten thousand folks there was a bit of everything...unicycles,
skate boards, tandems, garage junkers, beach cruisers, etc., etc.
Great fun...here's a few pics.

Excellent weather this year, not too hot, and a nice tailwind much of the way.  Graham had a great experience in his first STP. He was safe, alert, and faster than I had imagined, arriving in Centralia and Portland around 2:00 each day. Some chucklehead apparently scattered tacks along the roadside near Scapoose in Oregon, but we were fortunate enough to miss that feature, and otherwise the riders and communities were mutually supportive. I like this ride more and more each year.

We saw a nice fellow on a 58cm Sam on the road and a 56cm blue Rambouillet at the start in Seattle, along with 7,456 Madones. Watching the race bikes on the chip-seal and hearing and seeing the vibration in their frames and forks made me appreciate my Saluki and Hetres; our bikes performed exceptionally well.
