Planning to stop by RivHQ tomorrow... will be dropped off by car, but was planning to ride to Berkeley afterwards.

Looking at Google maps, I get two possible routes.  The problem is, both say that I should ride on HWY 24, and the street view there doesn't look very pleasant (it's freeway!).  Is there a better route that avoids the highway and isn't much longer than 20 miles [time constraints]?

I remember that Grant said that he was going to publish a route, but I don't remember ever seeing that.

Thanks!
-Rex

The way I go is alongside 24 until you hit the bike path that is right ALONGSIDE 24 but it is a bike path.  That gets you up to Orinda, where I usually cut over (south, right) on Camino Pablo to Wildcat, over Inspiration Point and drop into North Berkeley on Spruce.

On Google Maps if you push the bike button, it will keep you off the freeway.

Ha!  I hit the bike button and it does want you to ride on the side of Hwy 24 from Orinda all the way up to Fish Ranch.  That's nuts!  Although I admit I've seen a Bombadil riding up that way.

OK, so I wasn't crazy.  I thought that perhaps you'd been given a better route.  I'll look for the bike path...  not being a local (neither to WC nor Berkeley) I must confess ignorance of these places that you call Orinda, Camino Pablo, Wildcat, Inspriation Point, etc...  I'll look at the map some more, but I might be back asking for clarification!

I can't provide you a blow-by-blow at the moment, but I'd go from WC through Lafayette, Moraga, Canyon, up Pinehurst to Skyline, and from Skyline towards Berkeley. It's more scenic than going along the 24. Lots of trees.

I tried to post these as tiny URL's but they didn't go through. Here
are the Google maps links for 3 routes from RBW to Berkeley, if anyone
else needs them.

Through Orinda to Wildcat Canyon route:
http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=2040+North+Main+St+%23+19,+Walnut+Creek,+CA+94596+(Rivendell+Bicycle+Works)&daddr=orinda,+CA+to:Tilden+Regional+Park,+Berkeley,+CA+to:shattuck+%26+university,+berkeley,+ca&hl=en&sll=37.87255,-122.192688&sspn=0.103933,0.222988&geocode=FR9vQgIdxnS5-CEMe1SC7Vfptg%3BFZz1QQIdl6-3-Cn_I8hdvXyFgDGJZxICN8DaiQ%3BFfFwQgIdg2K2-CE71t63d4w_ew%3BFYviQQIdVFe2-CmrMPFdnn6FgDGOHqTR0sb_TQ&vpsrc=0&dirflg=b&mra=ls&t=m&lci=bike&z=13

Through Moraga and Canyon, up to Skyline route:
http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=2040+North+Main+St+%23+19,+Walnut+Creek,+CA+94596+(Rivendell+Bicycle+Works)&daddr=canyon,+CA+to:37.8426464,-122.197202+to:37.8514593,-122.2243426+to:shattuck+%26+university,+berkeley,+ca&hl=en&sll=37.851611,-122.214661&sspn=0.025991,0.055747&geocode=FR9vQgIdxnS5-CEMe1SC7Vfptg%3BFco9QQIdDOa3-Ckn-6CfcYiPgDGIZXxGrGki1A%3BFdZuQQIdLmu3-CntOVfnX32FgDGs1L6iB6RDkQ%3BFUORQQIdKgG3-Ckt8f4MoX2FgDG_ghLSykn-Dg%3BFYviQQIdVFe2-CmrMPFdnn6FgDGOHqTR0sb_TQ&vpsrc=0&dirflg=b&mra=dpe&mrsp=3&sz=15&via=2,3&t=m&lci=bike&z=15

This one includes Pig Farm Hill and the 3 Bears climb:

Thanks for the routes!

One question about the first one (Orinda to Wildcat Canyon)

Is Meadows Canyon Trail paved?  If not, and if I decide to take the paved route to get back quicker (depends how much time I spend at RBW!) how bad is the ride down Wildcat Canyon Road?  Are the drivers crazy [crazier than normal] on the blind curves in that area?

I'll answer the second part. This is a very heavily biked area, and most drivers are aware of it. You won't find a lot of bike hatin' cowboys near Berkeley.

But please be careful of bad pavement. An experienced cyclist was killed on a descent in that area last week when his wheel got caught in a groove in the pavement, throwing him off his bike into oncoming traffic.

I heard about that.  Very sad.

The one thing that we often seem to forget, though, is that there's quite a risk in the two hour drive to get to RBW in the first place!

Thanks for the concern and reminder to be careful...

I would suggest those directions (wave hi while on Newell) except
after turning left on Olympic, turn right on Pleasant Hill Road, left
on Mt. Diablo Blvd., right on Brown Ave, left on Deer Hill Rd., right
where it dead ends at Happy Valley Rd. to Bear Creek Rd.; then left
and it will become Wildcat Canyon Rd. after crossing Camino Pablo/San
Pablo Dam Rd.

The trail next to 24, Camino Pablo, then Wildcat (the paved rout).

Some carbon mounted roadies were surprised to see me tailing then on the Mt Diablo road climb and started asking if I was carrying bricks in my bags (nope, just some riv goodies, including a new mark's rack), and saying that I should have baguettes sticking out the top of them.  After more not dropping me (though I managed the hidden valley road climb faster than their slowest rider, they offered to show me a better route...  Ended up riding the steepest part of Wildcat with their strongest rider (long time racer, he apparently lives up there) and getting seriously punished trying to keep up a decent pace.
