Could not believe how succesful Jinx was at doing his swap so I was
wondering if anyone out there with a 52cm Bombadil would ever consider
a swap for a 54 Hilsen. They have about the same standover but the
Hilsen has a shorter top tube but the real issue is my wife is stating
that my Rivendell must become a bike built for two with my daughter
sharing the bike since it was so "expensive". With me being about 240
and my daughter at 35lbs I feel we are going to max out the weight on
the Hilsen pretty fast and was looking to haul picnics and other stuff
with us. I was thinking the Bombadil would be a good fit to bring over
my 650b stuff without spending too much extra. I was looking for one
of the older Bomba's, not too much of a fan of the new style of
diagatube. I really love the color of my hilsen and I am sure Joe will
balk at me since I just picked this up from him a couple of months ago
but just throwing out a feeler here, anyone with any interesting
offers I am always open to talk. Here is a link to my pics

Your offering to trade that??! I think you need to sleep on it. :-)

I know, right?  Maybe we should start a bike swapping reality show.  The swap will happen for one year, after which time you have to declare whether you want to swap back or not.  Only if both don't want to trade back is the swap permanent.

Dude......don't do it! Get a trailer for hauling kids and stuff with
your Hilsen. Children grow up fast and need to ride their own
eventually. Or.... get a old steel mountainbike and a xtracycle
conversion or even a full on cargo bike for those times when you are
out with the fam. Keep your groovin Hilsen for you. You owe it to
yourself to enjoy life and exercise. Your wife and child will
appreciate that and get the benefit ultimately. You could buy a Bomba
later also. Just sayin.......for what its worth.

My AHH kid seat is still a work in progress --- I've added a big "U" bolt as a backrest... EasyRider style... since this pic was taken --- but the kids love it. The kid weight is all on the dropout. I called RivHQ because I had the same "hilsen is too frail" concerns.  I never really got the official go-ahead but was told a few anecdotes of similar and worse abuses to the AHH than my sub 50lb son and all was well.

The seat and foot rests are held onto the rack with zip ties so can be easily removed + re-attached. Also, it's easy enough to remove the whole rack... just 4 bolts. I've looked at several "off the shelf" options and this home built set up seems better than anything I've seen in a store.

Getting the kid out on the bike with you is a great time.

Buy a trailer like a Burley.

Sell the trailer to another like-minded cyclist when your daughter gets older.

Keep your bike.

Cheers,
Sean

Anyone have any experience with that wehoo igo?  Looks like a kid recumbent but can't find another of reviews online.

Go to Goodwill and buy a child's bike. Probably cost you $25. Or buy an errand/hauler for yourself and configure it for a rear child seat... still $25.

FWIW, I'm 280+, and ride my AHH periodically with well loaded large saddle sack and front slickersack, and it hasn't yet felt like the bike wasn't up to it.  Might be the glory of the second top tube.

Yeah on the 54 it would be hard to squeeze in a second tube,  Haha.  Does trailer weight not affect the overall weight like panniers,  etc?  Just wondering what direction to go with the kid.

A trailer brings its own set of load-bearing wheels, which a bike seat does not. The hitch is the only contact with your bike. It puts pressure on your chain stays, but I have hauled two kids, picnic lunch, etc, clamped to the back of a steel Bianchi with far less robustness than your Hilsen.

No problems that I could detect.

Sean

For a child that's big enough to pedal (~ages 4 through 10 or so).  I've had tremendous fun using the Burley Piccolo.  It's got a very sturdy tubular cromo rear rack that attaches to the appropriate places for a rack to attach to, and the bike part screws on quick and easy.  I've used it on a Hillborne and a Bombadil.  My kids are very close to allowing me to retire the Piccolo and pass it on.

It's now discontinued by Burley, it seems, but it's still by far the best of it's kind, in my opinion.  You can still find them online for ~$350.  When it's time to sell mine, I expect to have no difficulty getting ~$275.  The resale value on these things is spectacular.

Yes. I have a Piccolo, attaches to my Hilsen in fact, and the kids absolutely love it. One of the best bike investments a parent can make.

+3 on the Piccolo. Finding one is a chore, but it's the best tag-along out there (tried Adams and Trek). Plus you can use the rack for other stuff which is nice.

I rode miles and miles with the kids in a Burly and it's much more
comfortable and stable than a bike seat and the cars give you plenty
of room. Apparently people don't mind killing adults, but nobody wants
to be a child killer.

I now have a tandem and triplet. Spending this kind of quality time
with the kids is worth every penny of money we spent on the
bikes/trailers etc. I tell my wife that all the bikes put together
are still a fraction of the cost of a midlife crisis car, which I'll
never have (maybe the crisis, but not the car :-).

I was under the impression Burley was making them again. A quick Google search shows a current page on the Burley site and plenty of online retailers claim to have stock.

When Catie, now an almost eye-rolling 11, was 2-3, I carted her around
in a trailer pulled by a tank-weight, flexy-flyer, early Raleigh
Technium fixie and it worked very well -- a trailer ride including a
trip to the nearby dollar store to buy her a balloon or somesuch was
part of our Sat morning schedule. I can attest to the truth that the
trailer (axiom, IIRC) flexed the whiplash Raleigh far less than a bike
seat would have. (And it was great "training) with a 67" gear against
a stromg, ABQ headwind.) Age 4, she got her first of, currently, four
bikes.

(I briefly had a Burley Piccolo, Catie age 8 or so, but she didn't like it.)

Yeah, our oldest turns 8 next week. He's not too down with the piccolo like he used to be, but it's good for a novelty if there's otherwise somewhere we have to be fast. The 4 y.o. however loves!!! it. :-)
