A bit past half way down the 2/28 Blug post (yeah, I don't keep
current on the Blug), there's a paragraph about wrestilng with a
modern Campy crank. The photo shows Mark attacking the crank with a
puller. The paragraph laments the loss of the 'servicability' of old
Campy parts.

The thing is, that's clearly an Ultra Torque crank in the photo. It
has external cups and retaining clip on the drive side cup. It's as
easy a crank / BB to mount or dismount as it can possibly be. There's
no need for a crank puller on one of those, and no possible use for
one.

Remove one bolt from inside the split hollow spindle, remove the
retainer clip, and the cranks slide right out.

Did someone manage to strip out or cross thread the spindle bolt?
That would make it a pain to get the crank apart, but the puller
probably wouldn't help. You'd want to drill out the bolt instead.
The only other explanation I can think of is that someone is treating
that crank like it has a square taper and a cartridge BB. No good
will come of that.

I hope they haven't taken a hacksaw to that crank.

I don't know how you can be so certain of the crank ID.  One thing in the blog I can attest to, 1980s vintage Campy parts were a snap to service, wy easier than anything on the market today.  But they did demand regular attention.

I thought the same as you... but... it is not an Ultra-Torque.
It is a Power-Torque. Power Torque is as bad as the photo makes it seem.

I am happy to have alloy Ultra-Torques from 2007.

There had to be an explanation. I hadn't paid any attention to PT
since it came out after I bought my UT cranks. This looks as fun as
extracting cotter pins from steel cranks.

I'm not big on fixing aluminum crankarms to splines, this reinforces
that bias.

That is several levels of stupid. The Campy Only crowd must be choking.

The only problem I have found with the UT cranks are that the bearings are not actually sealed. Seized drive-side bearings are fairly common, if you ride in all weather, as many of us do. I had to replace the bearings with less than 5000 miles on them.
