Iv'e had my Cygolite Metro 420 for a few commutes and night time grocery runs and it's great. I bought it from Amazon before realizing Riv was carrying the 300s on their site. I highly recommend this model and can testify that the 300 is sufficient for most uses. The situation where all off my 420 lumens is useful is also the situation I probably need long battery life and those two things are mutually exclusive. I use the day blinky during the day, the nighttime blinky on lit roads at night, and the low setting for the trail at night. It has the fancy feature of being able to turn it on and off without cycling through all the modes.

Here it is on Riv priced so low you really don't need to shop around: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/lt006.htm

I love my 300. For my purposes, it has me rethinking the whole dyno hub thing.

300 gets my vote, also.  Have these on mine and my daughter's bikes, and carry a spare charged battery.

Well, tomorrow, my B&M Luxos dynamo light comes in from Peter White.
I can't wait and am hoping that this is the light that solves
everything. Nice visiblity in terms of distance, bright and WIDE... I
currently have/had and IQ Cyo before I busted it from the mount.

Hey let us know how you like the Luxos. I just ordered a Son 28 wheel from Riv and need a front head lamp and taillight. Was thinking a Edelux and a B&M toplight brake model, just not sure yet.....the Luxos looks pretty groovy.

That Luxus looks pretty shweet, shame I just put on my IQ Cyo plus. If the Luxus stands up to the test though maybe I can wrap it up as a B-day present to myself. shame the last few times I called Peter about some things the guy was pretty pissy on the phone, the young lady who works there is much more pleasant to deal with.

Sorry to steal your Cygolite thread. One thing to consider with many
of the bright lights nowadays is that the beams are symmetric, so they
act like a car's high beam and have the potential to blind pedestrians
and drivers. The Europeans have a strict standard and make asymmetric
beams. The second benefit of the asymmetric beam is that all the
light is being directed to the road and not lighting the trees above
you, so your lumens count for more. Some people complain that they
can't see road signs as well with the asymmetric beams. I carry a
helmet light and use that when I need to illuminate above the road
more effectively.

The 80-lux Phillips saferide LED headlamp is probably the best battery
light out there that is asymmetric in my experience. Another solid
choice is the B&M Ixon IQ. You might be able to get them for under
$100 if you order direct from Europe.

There are a bunch of asymmetric lights that put out a lot of light. In
terms of price for output, perhaps the Magicshine worked best in my
experience, but battery quality is a concern. The Magicshine was a
good choice for me because on the higher settings, it can light up
both lanes and I can turn safely with good visibility. I couldn't say
that with the IQ Cyo, which only lights up about 1 lane and on twisty
curves, the light is off the side of the road.

The Cygolite is a good price and looks quite solid. As an alternative,
you could consider mounting a flashlight on a Twofish lockblock. That
is my backup light. The most accessible is a AA light that works great
with NiMH rechargeables. The Fenix LD20 uses 2 AA lights and works
great. My main backup light is the Fenix PD32 light with rechargeable
18650 batteries. It's a bit of an investment because you need to buy
the light $70 plus get rechargable lithiums + charger which will run
another $70 or so for a quality unit and good batteries (Pila+
Panasonic). The form factor is slightly longer and fatter than a AA
battery, but because it's lithium it cranks out an amazing amount of
light. I recommend candlepowerforums for the light nut and good
research.

Toshi, the cygolite is basically a very, very good flashlight.  It's a super handy size, it has ready to go bike mount, great battery and easy recharge, and nice nice range of operating modes, between varying brightness and flash pattern
