Hi,

When the Senate comes back into session next week, they'll be
voting on whether to grant themselves the power to turn off parts of the
Internet. Fun sites you YouTube. Informative sites like Wikipedia.
Political sites like MoveOn.org.

If enacted, new laws would force Internet Service Providers to block
websites that any corporation suspects violates a copyright or suspects
doesn't monitor it's users' content close enough for copyrighted
materials. That means that any website, foreign or based in the U.S.,
could be wiped out on suspicion and made unavailable to everyone in the
world.

The Senate must reject the Internet Censorship Act. Sign this petition and
spread the word.

http://pol.moveon.org/nointernetcensorship/?r_by=-17365590-j1JyLAx&rc=pac_nointernetcensorship_letter.email.g2

Thanks!

I've added my little name.
It's time the American people stood up to the big money bullies who
own Congress. In this case "big content" are the bullies and we should
give them a punch in the nose.

While it seems out of place, there is something to think about as it directly affects us. Under the SOPA and PIPA, Rivendell's web site could be shut down for violating the copyrighted material of the Tolkein family and New Line Cinema.

More amusingly than that:

1. it could be shut down for the ALLEGED violation - w/o proof.
2. Google groups could be shut down for someone posting something like
that to this list.

Dave - I do appreciate your posting the information.  I am surprised by how few people are aware of the workings of this bill, and if a few list members were educated and decided to act, that is a good thing in my opinion.  As this was also widely supported in manner and deed across the internet, I'm as comfortable as I'm going to be in posting non-RBW topics to this list.

In short, please do not interpret the existence of this thread to mean that all guidelines are off within the confines of this group discussion.  It is a one-time exception.

Please continue to honor what has been one of the truly exceptional efforts on the net - keeping this group generally on-topic and friendly.

This group has been spectacularly on-topic and friendly. That is due to the unobtrusive but effective list management style of Jim and the topicality and friendliness of Riv owners and supporters. Chapeau!

It may be a really really bad bill and need all the attention it can get.. just hate seeing it here.. my opinion .. but one that is true to me...
Even if these bills are bad, the end result and problem they are trying to fix is real. Stealing is stealing and it doesn't matter how much money the big content people make.
So even if the bill is bad and even if blah blah blah etc.. then it dives into other ways to do the same thing without infringing on freedom of speech. Or discussion on "big business" or those "making to much" or "having to much" as the only lame excuse to say the steeling of intellectual property is ok.

I'm against the bill.. but really hate seeing political discussion introduced here... once again.. since it has the door was open.

No matter what I or anyone else decides and no matter what may be censored or whom may be sensored here or how others feel.. My opinion still stands as mine and is valid. Just as rightfully stated as anyone else's. I make no demand or have any expectation that anyone agree nor in malice do I state it. It just is ..
Sad to see more political garbage in what was thought a safe haven from such. Not like it's not already every where else.

I have yet to meet a single person that openly supports this legislation. So I'm assuming that a vast majority of The People are opposed it. I think the fact that politicians have authored and sponsor it (in spite of this fact) illustrates one of the most heinous problems with politics in America. That is, they're obviously prepared to set aside the desires of their constituents in favor of political agendas. Why do we stand for it?

"Representative democracy" is a myth.
~
I shouldn't talk, because I started all this by mistake! The
rbw-owners-bunch address was in an address book I group-emailed, so my
political leanings were inadvertently introduced in a VERY off-topic manner.

For the record, I abhor OT posts, as well as topics that drift wildly OT
or from their original intent. I apologized to Jim (Cyclofiend), as I
felt it was appropriate to do so. In respect for the forum's Principle
Intent, I would ask that people let this matter fade, get back to one of
our rare joys, and divest this highly charged and unrelated business
from the few bits of fun we can manage.

Thank you for your well-considered, though OT, responses. Back to the
geekery that is Ours!

the vote is being delayed, which is fantastic.  nothing wrong with the idea of preventing piracy, there just has to be a better way of doing it than through terrible legislation:  http://www.pcworld.com/article/248466/internets_protest_prods_us_senate_to_delay_vote.html

Doesn't matter to me how many are against it. Stealing is still wrong .. Stop pirating / steeling and these type of bills wouldn't be discussed. So that means you are against blocking the child porn site as well..

You're right young brother, you're right. There was a remark on here
earlier about blocking the Riv site. Grant's pretty smart and I'm
sure he's done his homework. However, if he used the name, and it was
trademarked, and he didn't have permission, well.... that's that.

I would agree that big money is behind this, but so what. In fact, it
has to be so-how many times has congress agreed on anything, but,
boom, here they are. So you know some contributors got on the phone.
Or lobbyists or what have you.

Think of all the videos of old bands that are on You Tube. Every time
one of those is played, those guys are entitled to a cut, however
small. They earned it and deserve it. I'm stymied to find any
argument more ridiculous than. "Don't they have enough money?".
That's not the point.

Due process. It's one of our founding principles and I think allot of people still like it. Hence the multitudes coming out against this bill.

I sure hope Congress is paying attention as the RBW group solves this problem. You're welcome, Congress!

Whenever I'm tempted to engage in these debates, I remind myself of a news article I read in the last couple years: there is a correlation between brain structure and political persuasion. One type of political person tends to be enhanced in the part of the brain that quickly perceives threats and makes bold decisions, while the other type is enhanced in the part of the brain that is comfortable in the nuanced gray areas, and would rather study the problem than make a decision. Both have value, but they don't consider the same inputs in the same way. The upshot is that the people who disagree with me, often, simply lack the brain capacity to understand my point of view! (and vice versa, I suppose).

Soooo anyway, I'm thinking of twining and shellacking my handlebars. Will the added 10g front-loading of hemp and shellac necessitate a re-rake of my fork? Would it make sense to lower front tire pressure by 3.2 psi to compensate? Also, is it taboo to use black kool-stop pads? Will my bike even stop with black pads? The salmon ones clash with my tweed mudflap, but the black ones appear to be exactly the same, except color. Help!

Mr Thill,
You fail to mention whether or not that tweed mudflap is attached with appropriate  fasteners or if the use of the heinous
zip tie is involved.
Your post is approaching the realm of the inadequate.
