I was cruising (casually, coolly, smoothly, urbanely) home in the hooks on the gofast (elegant in khaki shorts and Hawaiian shirt) when I was passed by a young 30- or 40-something in-and-on usual kit who, as he passed, gave me a hand signal consisting of fist with thumb and little finger extended. I know that in Hawaii this means something like, "go easy". Is that what it means on the mainland, or did I fail to respond to an insult? (It was insult enough that he passed me -- young whippersnapper -- *&$)!@)#*!! -- identifying more and more with Abe Simpson -- and just as confused).

Anyway, as nice as Hawaiian shirts are, they flap annoyingly against a headwind.

That hand sign also means "Call me" or "The phone is ringing and it's
for you."

I thought it signified that only on Mauritius.

I don't know, but I rode by a group watching a high school football game (outside the fence from the street), and I was on my Hillborne comfortably riding by with the big loafer bag on the back. One of the smart-ass spectators yelled, "Hey, do you have Toto in there?" Could have been funny, but his tone had a mean edge to it.

I've never seen the shaka used in an obscene fashion. Considering that you were wearing a Hawaiian shirt, I'll bet the rider was expressing solidarity with your Aloha spirit.

Patrick:

Time to switch to de-caf. I doubt any insult was intended.

Also means "hang loose" which has a lot of meanings. Your Hawaiian
shirt and "casual, cool, ..." style probably elicited the gesture in
respect.

Whew! Thanks. Better start my day a la Sam Pepys with a pint or two of ale instead of 20 oz of strong coffee.

"Shaka Bra!" = Right On. It's cool. Hey, alright! Hang Loose.

Kind of situation specific, but all of 'em is "All Good"! Never seen
it as a negative gesture.
