Hi all:

I have been using a Big Hoss saddle bag using a Mark's mini and Brooks B-17 with saddle bag loops, but its shape does not readily lend itself to carrying a computer and books and notebooks.  I am thinking of switching to panniers and a rack.  Anyone use such a combination on a Rambouillet?  Any recommendations?  (Load should be not be more than 15 pounds.)

Books will necessitate something more beefy than the lightweight long rear rack that Rivendell sells.

So the Nitto big rear makes a lot of sense. It fits easily on the Ram's mounts. Pretty sure the sidepulls won't intersect the rack's support rods. The Ram can handle a full rear rack, just not a full size front rack.

Nitto + Riv frame routinely is a tight match. The Nitto big is one of those inexpensive things that is worth it. I've toured many times with one on several different Rivendells.

I've been using a cheap Bor Yueh (came with a Fuji Touring many years ago) and some Nashbar panniers with no trouble at all. Not pretty, but effective.. Carries 55 lbs.

I have a pair of nearly new Swift Industries panniers and a nearly new silver Cosmo that would work on a Ram. I'm also looking for a Mark's rack for my Ram if you are interested.

Highly recommend the Tubus Cosmo. Specially for heal clearance issues.

+1 on the Cosmo. I have one on several bikes. Lower center of gravity for loads than the big Nitto rear rack, and nicer mounting options for rack-mounted taillights, too. Not quite as pretty as Nitto, though, IMHO.

I think the cosmo looks better on most bikes. The nitto's angles just look wrong on all but that perfect size. Off the bike however the nitto is a work of art.

Sorry, typo, I meant to say that Nitto big rack is one of those expensive things that is worth it.

But now that I think about it, the use you get out of it over time makes it a good bargain.

I found carrying my macbook in a Carradice Longflap worked when I wedged it against a rack but I could feel the weight that hi up.  I switched to a Carradice office bag which worked fine to protect the computer.  I retired two years ago and haven't used it since.  I would be willing to part with it, if you want it.  The only draw back I found with panniers for commuting was that they tended to get dirtier than a large saddle bag, but then my  30 mile commute included 10 miles of dirt.

Just took received my Swift Panniers.  Well made indeed.

Bruce Gordon racks sell for around the same as the Tubus.  He makes each to measure, so you get just the right fit for your bike.  Worth considering.

I ran a Tubus Luna on my Rabmouillet for a while.  It is the only rack that looks good enough to be on a Rambouillet.  It is a light duty rack but it is rated at a max load of 40lbs which should be more then adequate.  It has a single attachment point to the bike that uses the rear brake bolt.  This was a little funky to set up but was fine once it was in place.  It is also very narrow and can't be used to support a trunk bag.

That said I am back to using my Hoss on the Rambouillet because I don't like having a rack on it and it is not my primary commuter.  I laid a piece of corrugated plastic sign board in the bottom of the Hoss and it works well for hauling my clothes, lunch and occasionally a lap top.   If this is your primary commuter then the Luna is a good looking rack that doesn't over power the bike when there are no bags on it.

Are you looking to get rid of your marks rack? My tubus and even my swift panniers may be for trade.
