Are you both a Rivendell owner and Jefferson Airplane fan?

Was wondering about the SanFran cultural/possible generational link.

I am a Marylander. But a Rivendell owner and Jefferson Airplane fan. Listening to "You're my Best Friend" while cycling on quiet roads in the Spring is such a nice feeling.

There is a Rivendell/Mac question on Jim's site. Though more obscure, thought I would ask this one because of the SF area focus of the two, and I'm a fan of both.

Moderator, feel free to remove if this question is not approporiate to the forum, with my apologies...

This made me smile fondly. I like Jefferson Airplane, especially "Bathing at Baxter's" and "Volunteers." I am a big fan of Hot Tuna and have seen Jorma and Jack (and Barry) quite a few times. Jorma and Jack have kept getting better over the years, especially with maturity and sobriety. And I have been a Deadhead for many years' standing (dancing, more accurately) and have been mourning Jerry for a long time now. Although some of the new projects (Phil and Friends, Furthur, the stuff Weir is putting out through his TRI studio) are really quite good and take this music in some different directions at times.

And- of course, since I subscribe to this list- I have found Rivendell and Bridgestone before that to be pretty copacetic with how I think about bikes and riding them. Even in my racing days I preferred lugged steel (Bianchi Reparto Corse) or fillet brazed (Ritchey) frames, when everyone else was going to fat aluminum or titanium (I got out of racing around the time carbon fiber was catching on). My Riv A/R and the Ritchey handle better than the Bianchis ever did...

Jefferson Airplane is fine; I don't have any of their CD's /albums (whereas, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, OCMS, etc., I have about everything of);

Whenever I think of San Fran, I think of the Grateful Dead.    I have quite a bit of their music (not boxes of cassettes of shows (well, maybe some); I didn't make it to any of their shows, BUT!  Under my suit, when I got married a couple of decades ago, I did have a Dead shirt on, much to her chagrin...

Only time I made it to Cali, was 20 years ago, spent a few weeks around Malibu w/ the 'Corps, only got to see Ventura/Malibu/Beverly Hills/Hollywood area...  On my to-do list is to get to SF/RBW, Shasta, Lassen, Yosemite, Tahoe, Whitney, Sequoia, Death Valley...  maybe one day...

Yes indeed!  I'm a native Californian, transplanted to Maryland long ago but still have family and roots there.  I have fond memories of the Airplane, although I can't recall that I made it to any of their concerts.  Did see the Dead, Hendrix, and many other great bands in that era.  Have many fond memories of places like the Sound Factory in Sacramento and other unlikely venues.  My sister-in-law, Roberta Donnay, is a jazz singer in the Bay Area and also sings with Dan Hicks if anyone here is a fan of his.  Cheers, Steve

I never thought of the connection, but yes, by coincidence I am a fan of Jefferson Airplane.  The first three albums I bought as a teenager were:Sgt Peppers, Surrealistic Pillow and The Band.  I've worn out multiple copies of each in different media formats (thank god for the digital cloud!) along with one of my favorite SF recordings,  Super Session w/Kooper, Bloomfield and Stills.

Believe it or not there's a cycling connection. Jack was-or is-a
cyclist. I remember him riding fixed on the street 30 years ago.
Many more cycling/music connections.

This is an amazing thread!

I was never an Airplane fan back in the 60's...although I was the
right age and was from California. More into Cream, Doors, Hendrix.
But, for some reason, about a year ago I bought their "Worst Of" CD on
a whim, and was just blown away by how much I loved it, and related to
it.

Recently I bought most of their catalog on CD, and have been floating
in heaven ever since. The depth, the textures, the variety...amazing.

Eventually, I plan to delve into the Hot Tuna catalog. But for now, I
have a lot of listening to do.

My generation is early-to-mid-'70s Starship. A nice ride on a Rivendell with Miracles or Ride The Tiger running through your head is never a bad thing.

Yes, yes, yes!

Baxters was a daily listen for about 20 years as background yoga
music, Surrealistic Pillow & Baxters is the only music on my phone.
Best RBW Owners Bunch thread in years! Now work in a little Zappa...

The Dead & the Airplane played together many times.  Went to see the Airplane at Hollywood Bowl in '67 & the Dead were the intro act.  Pretty amazing times.  Highly recommend Hot Tuna.

@BigPaulie:

That's funny! My favorite Jefferson Airplane song is Won't You Try/Saturday

I like the live Woodstock version the best.

@ everyone else:

I wonder if Jack has been to RBW before. I don't know where he lives now. For some reason I would think he might like Rivbikes.

I kinda like Santana. (Yes, also a Bay area group) Soul Sacrifice is great for a long grinding climb or a sprint..

In the 1980's, I was living at Fillmore and Sacramento in San Francisco. One evening, after waiting for the light to change, I headed into the crosswalk toward my apartment.

Ripping around the corner and coming to an abrupt halt a few inches from my kneecaps was a gold Porche 911.

I made immediate and panicked eye contact with the driver, who looked more than a little surprised himself.

It was Paul Kantner.

In my post-grad bike shop days I used to ride down into town on Friday evenings in the summer and sit with the literary gang at George's Majestic Beer Garden. Levon Helm frequently came down from Springdale to join in. Not only fine music from those artists and albums you've mentioned but I have never had a more enjoyable live music experience than those nights with his attendance and commentary. Strongly associate riding bikes with The Band.

Yes and yes. There is a live show I bought from the Wolfgang site
recorded just before Surrealistic Pillow was released where Kantner
introduces "My Best Friend" as a song written by Skip Spence from Moby
Grape. I hadn't realized that.

Jack and Jorma both ride bikes (Jorma of both the pedaled variety and of the Harley variety); Jorma has referenced this on his web site.

On the Deadhead side, I believe Bobby Weir is also a cyclist.

Not a huge Airplane fan, maybe because of what the band eventually morphed into (Starship).  Hot Tuna, though, is the real thing.  And Jorma Kaukonen is surely the only Finnish American guitar hero, which counts for something in my book as I'm half Finnish myself.

Saw them when they changed their name to Jefferson Starship on the great lawn Central Park NYC 73'-74'. Free concert. Marty Balin and Grace.  Got up close to the stage and saw people doing some fliped out shit!! I was 13 at the time and it opened my eyes to what was going on.. Alot of those bands hit it at the right time. The music is good. Plenty of other bands came and went that didn't get the attention they derserved. Like alot of art I think you have to be hanging with the "IN" crowd to get exposure.

From the period, I'm more of a Blue Cheer than an Airplane person, but
am continuously impressed with the scene coming out of SF these days.
Sic Alps, Ty Segall, Fresh and Onlys, Thee Oh Sees, Girls, Rogue Wave,
Sonny and the Sunsets. Must be something in the water out there ...

I used to occasionally see Bob Weir mountain biking on Mt Tam... 25 years ago. When Mickey Thomas lived next door to me in Tam Valley.

Yeah.  I used to run into him on Tam when I was either running, or on my Ritchey.  I avoided greeting him with "hey, now".  He was pretty fit.

“You know how the title came about - Disraeli Gears - yeah? We had this Austin Westminster, and Mick Turner was one of the roadies who’d been with me a long time, and he was driving along and Eric (Clapton) was talking about getting a racing bicycle. Mick, driving, went ‘Oh yeah - Disraeli gears!’ meaning derailleur gears... We all just fell over... We said that’s got to be the album title”

Not a pop music or rock fan here, frankly, but a concertizing pianist
with a classical background playing the best contemporary composers.
Riv folks occupy a big tent.

But I'm proud to say I was a Capt. Beefheart fan when most rock
aficionados found him unlistenable!
