Well, I guess in light of Grant Petersen's pronouncement in his book
"Just RIde" there really should not be any "Riv-ish" gloves (LOL).

One of the gloves that I like, until I win the Lottery and can afford
Dromarti or Rapha gloves, are these: http://www.giro.com/us_en/lx-5493.html

The Giro LX gloves, which I have in a tan color, are quite nicely made
and have a "Classic" look compared to the usual Lycra gloves. The
price shown in the Giro site can usually be bettered on-line (e.g.
Amazon, eBay, etc.).

Even though you say you prefer a darker color, I'm gonna throw in a vote for Rivendell's gloves. I think the butterscotch-ish color is kinda cool, and may be more noticeable to drivers when signaling.

I live the Avenir Classic Comfort Cycling Gloves (Amazon: http://goo.gl/Z2Cuy). They are crotchet, black (which works for me as I get greasy), and, most important, fit my hands in the XL size. I didn't think my hands were that large till I started looking for cycling gloves...most pinch after a while, these stretch out. Oh yes, they're cheap as well - which is also good because I wear them out fairly quickly.

I generally ride with gloves as I like a bit of cushioning, especially on plain wrapped bars like the moustache bars on my Quickbeam. I may change up a bit when my Hunq arrives (this month???) which has cork grips on Albas. Still, having fallen more than once I've been saved from picking gravel out of the heel of my palm more than once by gloves.

Aloha,

Bob

Planet Bike Taurus? They sound like what you're looking for and I've seen 'em on the Web for as low as $13.95.

I have Nashbar crochet back gloves that work fine for me and are super cheap.

Other than the ones Riv sells (which only lasted me 3000 miles) Planet Bike is the only reasonably priced alternative that I know of. They look 'vintage' with the crocheted backs and leather but have Kevlar on the palms in case you hit pavement.

I love these gloves. Just ask your local shop to get them in from QBP.

Thanks,
Sean

The Spenco gloves are actually pretty nice. I've had a pair for a
couple of years now. Doesn't get as sweaty as the leather and crochet
gloves from Rivendell. I rotate between both. The Spenco gel seems
to last longer than the padding on the Riv gloves, also.

But there is something nice about getting a new pair of gloves from
Rivendell and going out on a ride to see how long before they start to
change color and show real beausage.
