I don't know what it is about my Betty Foy, who originally I bought as a 58 for my daughters, that I like so much. Is it the 650b wheels? I had the 200mm Bullmoose bars on it and it felt so agile and responsive to my driving thoughts. Never rode it with any heavy loads, just a Saddlesack XS and/or a Trunksack small. I currently have red Hetres and love how thy look and ride, but cannot seem to be able to fit the front Berthoud steel fender without it rubbing on the front tire. The rear I was able to fit with no issues. The culprit for the front issues is the Silver brake, which has left me with two options to pursue:
- Switch tires to 38mm Lierres, which I have already ordered, or...
- Swap the front Silver brake for a Paul Racer which I will also try if I don't like the Lierres. Unfortunately, I cannot use a rear Racer brake and sort of dislike the idea of different front/rear brakes, although its a minor detail.

I've also installed a Bosco Bullmoose bar to try now, and it seems that on the Betty's lower head tube, the fit of these bars is just perfectly amazing for a relaxed upright position, and fully realizes the spirit of the Betty. Once I address the issue with the front fender, hopefully next week when the Lierres are delivered, I'll do some longer rides and report.

Needless to sway, none of my daughters have ever ridden it outside our patio. Nor do they seem interested in biking for now...
My 13 year old son is growing so fast that within the next year or so, I expect him to be able to ride all my Rivs. We already ride the same size in dual suspension MTBs, although his has a shorter stem for now.

Every time I ride one of my Rivs, I really like it. When I switch, I seem to think that this one is the one I like best. But if I were pressed to sell any of them, the Atlantis and the Betty seem to be the ones I'd have the hardest time letting go. And between those two... its too painful to even consider.

For me, the one negative for the Betty is loading it on the car now that it will have fenders. But then again, it's not the bike I think about driving somewhere to ride. Will have to figure something out since I only have wheel tray racks and with rendered bikes, you need a top tube.

BTW, had I originally bought the Betty/Yves for myself, I would have likely gotten the 62 based on Keven's recommendation. However, the more I ride the 58, the better I like it. My Atlantis and Hilsen are 61 and the Hunqapillar is 58. On the Homer, I use a 7cm stem with 48 Noodles and feel too stretched out. It's the one remaining bike with drop bars, and the one I ride the least right now.

I'm not sure I answere your question well. The answer is really full of intangibles that work synergistically to make the Betty an awesome legen... wait for it... dary bike!!!

Re the original question: I bought a Betty for my wife, who re-learned
the joys of riding on it, only to abandon the Betty in pursuit of the
infamous "faster" bike. This has allowed me to use the Betty for my
daily commuting and shopping trips, and there are occasions when I
prefer to hop on the Betty instead of my treasured Saluki. Why? Yes,
the step through frame offers some minor advantages. The frame is
comfortable (and more comfortable than any other mixte I've ridden),
but certainly no more so than the Saluki. I think the reason it's my
go-to bike for short trips is because of the way it is set it up, with
the albatross bars, the Sugino XD2 chainring with chainguard (no mess
on the pants), the elegantly cruddy Sun Race thumbshifters (which may
be the best $16 buy in the whole world) and of course the ridiculously
springy Brooks B67 saddle. I,m sure I'd have never dared outfit my
Saluki this way, and these features might all be something of an
annoyance on rides longer than 15 miles or so. But for trips 5 miles
or so, the Betty is just divine, and besides, there's nothing like
overtaking the latest carbon racer while riding a steel mixte.

The only minor complaint I have about the Betty is the missing space
for the extra water bottle...

Mike:  What size?  And ballpark price for the bike?  Thanks, and Happy New Year!  Tom
