Question for Vermont Riders

Hey Vermont Riv Riders -

I am wondering if anyone has done any riding on Route 30 in Central/Southern Vermont.  I am planning a ride down to East Dorset VT from Burlington, and just wondering if you guys can shed any light.  

(it winds south from Middlebury, looks like an alternative to route 7).

Also, I have seen a bunch of people post recently with VT in their signature - does anyone want to meet up and do a riv ride later this summer?

Zach, I have never ridden rt 30 and it has been quite a few years since I drove it.  I remember it has narrower and windier than 22A, especially around lake Bomoseen and lake St Catherine,  but it does have  lower speed limit.   If I were going south from Burlington, I would take 116 or Dorset St, which parallels it to Hinesburg, then Silver St through Monckton Ridge to Vergennes, then go east and take the Lake rd, which has good views, good pavement, and low traffic.

Local Motion sells the Lake Champlain Bikeways Map which shows Lake st Stage rd as the preferred rt , with rt 30 as an alternative.  The map sells for 7.95 and is excellent.  The state cycling map just became available, but I have not seen it.

To obtain a single paper copy of the map, you can call 1-800-VERMONT or you can go to VermontVacation.com and click on the "Request" link under "Free Vacation Packet" on the home page.  Then, you can fill out the online form.  Where it asks about "Favorite Activities" scroll down to "Biking."  Although this form doesn't allow you to ask for the "Vermont Bikeways" map in particular, I'm assured that all who choose "biking" will be sent this map.

I doubt I'll be up for a Burlington to Dorsett ride, but could enjoy doing a piece of it.   What's your time frame.  Are you wedded to that trip or just looking for the Vt experience?

Thanks for the link to that map, that's a fantastic resource.  

I am actually leaving tomorrow, doing my route planning today, so this is perfect.  I am a fan of Greenbush road for leaving Burlington, so I am taking that down to Ferrisburgh, then on 7 for a bit to Middlebury, then going to take 30 (which actually is marked as bike friendly on this map, which is cool) to Lake Bomoseen, then going to do the Hartford/Delaware Rail Trail, then cut across to Manchester and then up to East Dorset.

Not sure how I am going to come back up, i'll probably look at this map and come up with a route!  

Good stuff.

(also, I live in Burlington, I am going to a retreat this weekend in East Dorset, so wanted to ride down there)

The Local Motion map is excellent, as is the ACA Green Mountain Loop.
I used both last summer touring Vermont on my Sam.

Yep, just grabbed the LM map before they closed, will probably do some adjusting to my route!

Particularly where I was resigned to ride 7.

So glad I grabbed this map.  Completely redesigned the trip, have totally eliminated route 7 (except for the short stretch to East Dorset, which I know and is actually beautiful).

Hi, Zack - I also highly recommend picking up a Vermont Gazetteer.  There are so many wonderful class 3 and 4 roads that wind through the state which often get overlooked.  If you time, I'd consider exploring the dirt roads around Middlebury/Bristol/Lincoln/Ripton - there are several breathtaking (in every sense) roads all around there, including the "Natural Turnpike," which is one of my favorites.  Good chance of a moose sighting through there . ... Diito in N. Vt.  Many of my regular routes are  in Fairfax, Fletcher, and Cambridge on great dirt & paved roads that aren't even on the state map.
