I'm traveling to Seattle tomorrow to take a week long course at the University of Washington. I'm bringing my Bike Friday Llama with the heavy upgrade with me and plan to explore the city on the bike trails tomorrow afternoon, and then ride mostt likely Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Friday evenings after 5:00 PM when I'm out of the lectures. I'm flying back home on Saturday afternoon, so with careful planning, I should be able to ride early on Saturday morning and be back in the hotel around 10:00 AM so I have time to pack the bike in its suitcase (it takes me about 50 minutes to ensure it really tight and won't come apart if the TSA agents lift it out), shower and leave for the airport around 12:30PM.

If anyone on this list feels like showing me around at an easy Rivendell pace, I'd be delighted. While I have no Rivendell parts on my Bike Friday, it's running 20" Big Apples and a new Berthoud Touring saddle. I may even wear my new Rivendell T-shirt... :-)

If you'd like to join me, e-mail off-list so we can exchange contact information. My hotel is very close to the UWA and the Gasworks Park.

You can download a great map of Seattle bike trails here,

http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/bikemaps.htm

There's also a free Seattle bike map app for ipad, itouch, and iphone.

You can pick up the actual map at almost any bike shop (free). Since
you're staying near Gasworks Park,
ask around for the bike shop in an area called Fremont, which is very
close to the park. This one bike shop in
Fremont (I forget the name), carries Riv stuff. There is also
Recycled Cycle near the UW campus. It's such a great
map that I use it in the car, too.

You'll be near or right on the Burke-Gilman bike trail which is a
major bike artery for Seattle. You should
have no problems exploring the city on you own.

Have fun. The weather will be perfect for you. Sun doesn't set until
after 7:30.

Thanks! I've downloaded several great maps on my Maplets app. I'll
check the Bike shops if I can.

Free Range Bikes in Fremont is what I think Boomer is referring to.
Nice little shop with a touch of Riv; saw a Betty Foy in the showroom.
Counterbalance Bicycles on the Burke-Gilman trail where the trail
intersects Blakely; can't miss it, it's in a rust-colored angular
building.
Recycled Cycles is on Boat Street a few blocks of the B-G near the U.
I think it's worth a visit; lots of Rivyish stuff there.

The Burke-Gilman is a very practical means of bike transportation in
the city. It runs right through the UW campus, very convenient. If you
take it to the Fremont Bridge. Once across the Fremont Bridge, go
across Westlake and take Dexter down to Belltown and explore the area.
The sculpture park is in that area on the waterfront at Broad and
Elliot; pack a lunch or dinner or snack and enjoy the view.

Gasworks park is on the B-G and Lake Union; if you're staying near
there, you'll have great access to the trail.

Going west on B-G takes you to Golden Gardens park/beach. It's just
past Shilshole Harbor/Marina.

If you're riding north-east on the trail, be aware that there's a
detour that takes you through a hilly neighborhood in in Lake City and
Lake Forest Park (it's a suburb or district in Seattle), and back onto
the trail after crossing Hwy 522. Once you're back on the trail, you
can connect to the Sammamish River Trail and take it out to Redmond
and beyond, if you have the time.

Enjoy your stay. Seattle's a great town.

Cheers,
Steve DeMont

The classic ride in Seattle--the one that always makes me think--"dang I am lucky to live here":

Start at Pike Place Market. Ride north along Western, stop in at Elliot Bay Bicycles, check out their collection of gorgeous vintage bikes, say hello to Bob Freeman. Continue north the waterfront, past the Olympic Sculpture Garden, through Myrtle Edwards Park, through the train yards of Interbay, and walk your bike over to the Ballard Locks. Head back toward Gasworks on the Burke Gilman, maybe stop in at the Dutch Bicycle Shop, definitely stop in and say hello to Kathleen at Freerange Cycles in Fremont. Right across the street from Freerange you'll see Broewer's Cafe, which has about 50 kinds of Belgian beer. Or, another favorite is Fremont Brewing, a bit further on, on Woodlawn just the other side of Fremont, where you can grab a beer literally inside the brewery.

Here's a google map of the general route: http://g.co/maps/5kr33

PM me if you'd like more detailed directions. I'm at Third and Union during the day, Brian Hanson (A.H.H.) is about a block away. Lunch maybe?

+1 on this ride! Turns out I'm free during the day most of the week,
and I'll be out on the Hillborne anyhow, so if a mini Riv ride
develops, I'd be all in.

On Saturday I took a very nice 17.5 mile ride led by Rob M. I'm not
free during the weekdays until 5:00-5:30pm. That leaves a good 1-1.5
hours to go do the ride you recommend, but we'd have to meet at
Gasworks Park since I know how to get there quickly.

We could plan this for Wednesday at 5:30pm if you are all free. Rob M.
said he might be able to make it as well and I already replied to
Brian's offer to ride one evening.

I brought a tail light but no front light so I'd need to back at the
Watertown Hotel before it got completely dark or buy a cheap front
light.

Looking forward to another great Seattle ride,

Rene

Rene - other Seattle riders - I'm planning on being at Gas Works around 5:30pm today, so I'll wait by the main parking lot.  We can head towards Golden Gardens and see if we have time to check out some of the other city sites before dark...

Excellent. I'll be there with my white Bike Friday Llama and front and rear black bags.

Brian,

It was wonderful to ride with you tonight and discover a different part of Seattle. Dinner at the Blue Moon (did I remember the name correctly?) was fantastic. Thank you for taking the time to ride with me. Please send me the photos you took.

Thanks again!

René,

Glad to hear you had some really fine chaps showing you around - I've
enjoyed their company a few times. Sorry I couldn't join you, but I'm
a school teacher in the suburbs north of Seattle. This is a very
hectic time of year, especially since I moved to a different school
this year to teach PE and Woodshop! A dream job for me, but it's taken
a ton of time and energy to get my program going.

Hope you had a smooth start to your school year, Rob M.

Seattle Riv Riders - I hope we can get together again sometime this
fall. I've really enjoyed the few events we've had so far. I still
dream of a Mountain Loop Highway S24O . . . next summer?

Best to all,
Alex

Had a great time, as well.  Here's proof that Rene was in Seattle - http://www.flickr.com/photos/stonehog/sets/72157627678368490/ .

We started in Gas Works and saw the Ballard Locks, Space Needle, and Olympic Sculpture Park.  He helped my navigation a bit around the Magnolia trail quagmire, and we got a good little climb in.  I also got to ride the Bike Friday (nice bike!).  All in all a fun evening ride.
