I was thinking about rigging up a little fishing pole transport system for my bike and though I'd ask if any of you have any tips.

My initial thought is to get a PVC tube with one end capped, drill some holes along the length, and secure it upright with zip ties on the side of my rack.

Scot, I'd say you're on the right track. What kind of rod are you
carrying? I've carried fly rods in their own tubes hundreds of miles
with no issues. I just bolt a PVC end cap to one of the rear dropout
braze-ons, then toe strap the rod tube to the rear rack. This photo
sort of shows it in action but with a small travel rod tube. I've
carried up to 4 1/2 ft tubes this way, though.

All the best roads follow the river.  One thing I like about my Carsick panniers are the outside pockets on front and back.  I can slip in a multipiece rod tube and secure it on top with a toe strap.  There's a Chapman fishing bag inside the pannier.  Brian sells a single, lined canvas pannier for $115.

This is a 4-piece rod, but a 3-pc. works just as well. I have a lot of rods.  I've tried a 3pc. in a leather tube strapped to the top tube, but it's ungainly compared to this rig.
