I upgrade the mighty Atlantis / Sugino triple as opportunity permits.

I currently have the Riv recommended 107 Tange ($10 Craigslist)  installed which has served me well daily the past few years.

I now have the opportunity to pick up a new 113 Phil.

I was almost certain that in past Riv readers Grant specified a 113 Phil. Of course I could not find that recommendation anywhere last night as I poured over past issues.

Canvassing the website did not reveal guidance either.

Does anyone recollect this recommendation?

If this is true does anyone have a guess as to why the 3mm difference each side between manufacturers for the same bike?

Thanks,

There is a post from the past on this list talking about bottom brackets and the Atlantis frame.

For what if 107mm was working for you going to 113mm will just move the chain-rings out. If you need the wider q factor it will be nice. If you like a lowish q factor leaving it at 107 is a good idea.

One of the advantages of the Phil is adjustability. With the cups you can adjust the chainline by a few mm.

FWIW and future inquiries, when I had a 56cm Atlantis with a TA Zephyr
triple, I needed a 127.5mm Phil. Those Suginos are a whole different
animal.

They recommend the different lengths for different brands because although they are both JIS tapers, they still vary from brand to brand. Some tapers thus will fit more/less into the arms.

I should also add to my post above that I'm using the same exact setup
(TA Zephyr triple, 127.5 Phil) on a new-to-me Homer Hilsen. The cup
placement relative to the BB shell is the only difference. I MIGHT be
able to go with a slightly narrower spindle but why bother? (for now).
