I've been advised that it would be better to mount the Pletscher
Twin-Legger kickstand to my SimpleOne without the wedged top plate.
From the photos on the Riv site it looks like they used a short bolt
to mount it to the built-in kickstand plate.

What length and size bolt should I get to replace the long one that
came with the kickstand?

I believe riv sells such a bolt on thier site  http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/k5.htm  I would wait to order a few things though since you are going to pay 8 bucks shipping no matter what but beats using some kludge.  Just IMHO.

It's a standard size. I forget what it is though. Just take the long bolt to the hardware store. They'll be able to ID the diameter and thread pitch. Buy the shortest one they have. Get stainless or plated to minimize oxidation. Get a washer too if you don't already have one.

I add a nylok nut, even though the stand may be threaded. Somehow the
twisting action as the bike leans on the stand seems to loosen the
bolt after a while. Plus I'm sorta lock nut type of guy.

i would also suggest you try and find a allen head instead of a hex
bolt (which is all i could find at home depot), as it makes
installation much easier.

I went the other way. Switched from the allen and went to a hex. Much easier if you are mounting to a kickstand plate and need to get some torque on it. I find a hex wrench far to dainty while there are big tools available!

I like the idea of a nylock. I think I'll try that too, Doug.

I just threaded a nut on the long bolt and sawed off 3/4 of the length with a hacksaw. Cleaned up the edge with a file and removing the nut chased the threads. I used a ratchet to tighten the bolt on the bike. I also did away with the top plate since my Kogswell has a kickstand plate. Used a big washer, too.
