Wednesday was a day off, and I finally made time this summer for my favorite local climb. It is Land's End Road to the southeast of Grand Junction. There are several lovely mixed surface rides in the area, this one being the most dramatic. I bought the Legolas cross bike for these rides. It is some 18 miles one way with about 4000 ft of climbing to just below 10,000 ft. In spite of the big elevation gain, the ride is fairly gentle. The Legolas has 36/50 (TA) chainrings and the 12-36 cassette that Rivendell sells http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/cassettes/13-086 For the most part I used a 36X28or32 gear for the long dirt portion. It was a lovely day.

I snapped just a few photos with my phone. Go left from this link to see the progression to the top  http://www.flickr.com/photos/79695460@N00/6102747209/in/photostream/

So nice!

Next time you decide to run it...drop a line! I would certainly make time to come up from Denver for a beauty like that.

I've done a bunch of mountain biking in GJ, but never taken in the fantastic rides like this.

Me too.  I'd sure be tempted to head over from Colorado Springs, it looks great.  More and more dirt roads are about all I want to ride.

Then there is flattish dirt riding on top, with no water except what you can beg from car drivers. One can continue east to Highway 65 and do a loop back into the Grand Valley at ~120miles. I tried it once and called my wife 6 miles from home for a bailout. Yes I was that hot and tired.

Thanks for the ride report, and, nice to know this ride is so close to me, as i live nearby in Moab, UT.
I will definitely be over to do that ride!  My primary interest these days is "all roads" riding, and to that end have been doing some interesting multi-surface loops here in vicinity of Moab -- anyone is welcome to come visit and join in some of these rides, and the weather just keeps getting better (cooler) and i expect the autumn will be fantastic.
Also, the new Salt Lake rando group is doing a 200K brevet here later in Sept., and the Moab century is coming up soon as well.  I should be attending both, but first will be going back to the Rockies to ride in Rocky Mtn Nat. Park, and another lap on Mt. Evans before it starts snowin'!
