I placed my pre-order last night.

I have to say, I am really excited, I checked out DLG's website and his stuff is awesome.  I can't wait to see what he has done for Riv.

Anyone else pre-order?  20 bucks is pretty much free for a quality poster.

Just ordered mine. The most recent Blug reports that the poster was a bigger deal to put together than the artist had planned, so these will probably become scarce and expensive in the not-too-distant future.

Yesterday's Blug says the first 100 are shipping today (the 19th) so you left-coasters should have them very soon. We easterners will have to wait for the pony express to make its way. Grant also... well... not exactly "requested"... maybe "suggested" that nobody post an image of the poster online. Seems odd, given that DLG himself has thumbnails of all his posters on his own site.

BTW, what's with the new surprise/secrecy theme at RBW? First a bike to be bought sight unseen, now a poster?

From the Blug: "But we do wonder how many we can sell sight unseen, and so that’ll be our MO until it’s been leaked."

Yeah, I don't get it, either, but the chances that anyone would be disappointed with how the poster turned out are slim. I'm terrible at figuring out how to get pics from camera to computer to bike forum, so I won't be your leaker.

So many times I miss out on stuff like this by procrastinating. I saw this thread and then just went and ordered it. Glad I won't be missing out. One thing with RBW, if you see something you want, get it ASAP, you snooze and you could loose which was my situation with the brown MUSA shorts.

It's fun!    In an age of instantaneous gratification on googling something on the internet to find an answer, instead, there's a bit of a suspense, or better, anticipation, in not knowing exactly what it looks like ahead of time.  Like making a kid wait until Christmas morning to find out what's under the tree, instead of telling them "It's an X-box with a couple of games"...  Or whatever.

When there was a first hint of a new poster, I'd emailed G, to 'get on a list' for it.  At that point, even the artist wasn't announced, and I was in.  I suppose it's big news in SF, or certain circles, but, I'd not heard of the artist before... looked through his site and liked his work, new I'd love it, but, it's fun to not know what's going to show up when it arrives, just that its coming....

My order is in the queue.  Along with a Bosco t-shirt.  Am happy not knowing what it looks like.  In fact, I haven't even visited the artist's website too look at his other work.  This way won't be unduly influenced (either good or bad) in comparison to his other work.

That reminds me, have to eventually get my latest Hiawatha Cyclery poster in the frame.  Have both the poster and frame.  They just haven't met up yet.

I'm not a surprise guy, but the unknown-ness of the poster was what made me pull the trigger. It's fun. For me. I would be more excited to get the original Hunqapillar headbadge drawing than any poster, but that's just me. I've been a printer and a painter, and the further you get from making marks on paper, the less I like it.
Oh - apropos of Bay Area artists, Chester Arnold's "Tree" paintings are in Santa Rosa all summer. The guy's a tweed ride with no bike. If you like craftsmanship and unsettling detail, you'll like his paintings.

I definitely do not like surprises and usually make informed decisions before making a purchase. However, given that the poster is only $20, and that I like to support the folks at RBW, I had no problems ordering the poster sight unseen. I'm just outside of Los Angeles so I'm hoping it'll arrive sometime this week.

I will point out that I was not pleased with one of the recent "surprise" products from RBW. Does anyone remember that super secret and amazing garment that would revolutionize riding? I remember reading a couple of Blug posts with a presale on a sight unseen product---which ultimately was a MUSA Windshield. I really thought that was a failed attempt but I don't fault the guys for trying.

Back on topic with the poster. High quality prints of contemporary artwork usually will run out about $20-50 depending on the paper and print quality. Having seen some of the art work on DLG's web site, I think $20 SHIPPED is a drop in the bucket to support his work. Can't wait until mine arrives!

It arrived today... a DLG poster to call my very own. What a beautiful and playful image, and the colors are outstanding. Not as striking as I thought it might be, but the subtle aspects grow on you.

And an Easter Egg, if you look carefully enough... nice!

Did you happen to see the updated blug posting from the other day. The folks at Riv released a line-work image of the poster----they're going to continually release other images showing the progression of the poster. I really like that idea.

While this won't really spoil it for anyone who's waiting, I really like the "mid-century" font used on Riv products. I'm a huge fan of wares and products made from the Arts and Crafts movement and really think the design is pretty awesome. I'm really glad the font used on the poster matches.

DLG likes to show the posters on his site, and I don't know if it's there now, but I told him go ahead...since I didn't want to make him part of the waiting/surprise game--which he seemed happy to do, but ... so that led to the slow-leak thing we're showing on the BLUG.
I am really so glad that you-all like it. It was a nervous thing. I mean, many of us here (Bay Area) are familiar with his work, and it was a dumb-huge-irresponsible thing for us to go forward with it, considering how crummy our French posters sell---for a lot less. I really thought we'd have a ten-year supply.
I'm also glad nobody has taken me to the mat for "not showing." It could have been construed (tho incorrectly) as manipulative or weirdish power or something. We, here, had 2+ years of wondering what it would be like, and it's fun to know it'll be Not Bad and Worst, and yet not to know any of the details.
He came by and shot Milo (Keven's son, then 1.5) for an hour or so, took 250 or so photos and said only ONE was just right, and this is it. So, he signed one to Milo, which Milo will have when he's 60, and that'll be kind of neat. Anyway, I just want to say thank you all for being so nice and for liking it, and for putting up with some shenannigans that aren't meant to be bad, but aren't smooth and normal. This has been a wonderful experience. Goines was shocked that we could sell more than 640 posters without anybody seeing one. But, if you know his work, you know it's...a tiny gamble.
Yes, thanks..

Such serendipity!
Not wanting to spoil the surprise, I never looked at the artist's site. When the poster arrived, the style looked familiar, so I looked more closely at a poster my wife has had since before our marriage--a poster of Cafe Chez Panisse from the same artist.  Needless to say it made talking her into letting my hang it in the living room an easier job!

I got my poster today, as I was out traveling last week. Everyone who has posted so far has had nothing bad to say about it, so it feels that many in the bunch feel that nothing that comes out of RBW has any flaws at all.

While I like the poster, and do not regret buying it sight unseen, I can't say that it is what I expected it would be. I didn't look at the artist's website so I had no preconceived notions except for what my own sense of excitement at the mention of Rivendell.

Since those who have not bought it yet can actually see what it's about on the Blug section, I'm going to be a bit more specific in my comments:

I like it, but am not overwhelmed by it. What does bother me, though, is seeing the boys foot/shoe showing under the tire. Aesthetically (or whatever term is appropriate) it bugs me because my mind questions how can that be possible. Is he lifting the bike? Doesn't seem so, did then someone rolled the bike over his foot? Doesn't seem so either as the bike doesn't seem to be tilted up. Anyway...

Other than that detail, I believe that like almost all of the RBW frame colors (with the except of the Hunqapillar gray) the more I look at it, the more it will grow on me. That is, unless the issue with the foot under the wheel also makes me more and more uncomfortable...

Can anyone come up with my explanation that allows me to go "Aha!!!" and makes the whole foot thing make sense?

At least if I end up not liking it at all, I paid the lowest price by buying it unseen. I do like RBW's price escalation scheme as it supports us wild risk takers... :-D

Hope no one gets mad at me for this post...

Yeah, I had thought that the bike on the stand theory made sense, but my mind didn't like it because Rivendell bikes are meant to be ridden. It is a good explanation and does indeed take me in the good direction of Rivendell inciting curiosity on a child who will then likely want to ride the bike as he grows older. His expression certainly goes along with this idea, and I do like it a lot. Rivendell bikes certainly gave me a new cycling life and I do feel like a child around them.

Thanks for bringing this up and appeasing my troubled mind. I can now look at it and feel excited about it. Also, as I plan to mount it and display it in my office, I'll be checking out how many people react at the foot and that, in itself, will be quite entertaining as well.

What do people feel, is it better to mount it as a poster or to frame it under glass? Hmmmm....

As the brother of an artist I have just come to accept some things as they are without asking too many questions but it is not easy. Sometimes it seems stuff is out of perspective or askew but I have learned to take artistic items in thier totallity.  I am a ceramic artist (unprofessional ) and find people in my art take too much stock in detail, the shape of a handle, the cut of a lip, etc. Some of my nicest stuff were things that were done offhand and I had to look at for a while to love them.  Dont let a foot take away from the total quality of the work, I am gonna frame mine and try to squeeze it in the meager wall space I have left, my wife hates to cover the exposed brick, haha.

Two further comments:

The thing I noticed right away are the spokes that are coming 'round the outside (left side) of the left fork. Just the way my brain works, it zooms onto those small details. But the Poster is not a photograph, nor a technical drawing - it's an art piece, and it is best appreciated in that light. It's beautiful to behold.

Also, on the pricing, while I sure do appreciate the low price for a DLG original print, I cringe when I read that RBW was basically selling them below cost to early adopters. I want RBW to stay in business and be successful for a LONG TIME yet to come... but how can losing money on the first 640 posters possibly help that? Maybe they'll serve as advertising and drive new customers, but I bet anyone who displays one is already an evangelist for the marque.

Yes. Our minds like to play tricks on us and also take shortcuts and jump to conclusions...

Hopefully the poster, with its enticing composition and features, makes more people stop and gaze at it and then go online to find the answers to the questions their minds will ask subcontiously... How can I feel like a kid again...? Ommmmmm... Rivendell........... (with Bosco bars...) ;-)

I put my poster up in my new cube, as the first personal touch. When the head of IT came by and hassled me about having nothing personal in the cubicle, today, I could step aside and say, "What? I just put up a poster this morning!" And then I looked at it and thought, "what is going on with that kid's feet?"

For me, the simple idea of a bike in a workstand with a toddler on the loose makes me grimace and curl my hands into fists. I had this horror of my toddler losing a finger to my Quickbeam drivetrain. I didn't get a workstand until he was 11.

Bikes... belong solidly on the floor around little kids. So I prefer to think that the reason you can see Milo's feet is magic. Levitation, hinting at the feeling of flying you get from riding.

My grandson loved nothing more than to spin wheels at that age. Big wheels, little wheels, safe or dangerous. If there was a wheel to spin, he spun it. Could be the front wheel was levitated via. a twin-legger, and the little rascal could't resist. Makes me like the poster even more. Could be my grandson. Could be my bike. I don't have my poster yet, it's due to arrive on Thursday.  A few comments on comments... When I saw the first design, I noticed the boy's foot under the wheel and I just assumed that the bike was suspended; either in a workstand or hung up some other way.  Grant described the artist coming to RBW and taking many many photos.  Who knows, maybe the boy was actually doing this to a bike that was suspended.  After looking at most of his work, I'm not surprised that the artist used a child in the poster.  I think it's perfect for Rivendell, emphasizing the child-like joy that we get from our bicycles.   My slight quandry is the "Rivendell" on the downtube, along with a diagatube (sp?).  To me, this implies a custom bike, which is entirely possible, of course.  It makes sense that he would put Rivendell on the bike instead of Bombadil or another model.  Just wondering about the actual bike "model".

On mounting the poster, I found a good article yesterday and thought I'd start a separate post about it, with a link.  As you might imagine, there's more to know that (we) know.

I agree with the commenter who was taken aback by the thought of RBW losing money on the early posters.  Business decision was made, Grant seems to be OK with it.  I'm so glad that this effort is a success for him and RBW.  Without getting too gushy, he has helped bring another enjoyable "object" into the world.  It's a delight to look at, easy to use, and is available for less than the price of a good shirt.  Not to mention that even at the new price, it's more affordable than other DLG posters.
Everyone enjoy your poster!  Steve

You work in IT and you have a boss who has been hassling you about no
personal items in your cubicle? When they come by next time remind
them that the shortage of trained IT people is a good reason for you
not to be hassled about having a sparse cubicle.

Haha, at least you get a cubicle. I am in some Bloomberigan walless nightmare. I try to use my daughter's artwork to build somekind of barrier, better than staring at the girl across from me in the face for 8 hours. I should get a standup frame for the poster to better build the barrier.

I have way too many posters to frame them all, would be thousands of dollars to do that!  we hang all of our prints up using alligator clips and thumbtacks.  (and i am 36).  my wife works at a graphic design firm, so we get prints all the time, plus we pick them up from concerts that we go to, etc.  i think we have like four framed posters.

This one might get a frame.

The feet are the best part! Block out the feet and the image loses its balance. Older bike posters had naked women holding handlebars and flying through the cosmos---I can only imagine the Realist Uproar over that. But Rene, you can't be sure that the bike wasn't suspended above the ground, staged for the photo-shoot. In this photo, Keven was behind Milo, hands on his waist. No children were harmed nor pout at risk during the photo session. If you show up on a Tuesday (Milo's day here at Riv, every week) and his feel are in a cast or bandaged....pure coincidence, I swear!

I felt the same way. If you block the feet with your finger/hand, you lose the personality of the kid. And the kid is really what the poster is about, imo. In addition, without the feet he looks imprisoned. Finally, with the feet, the wheel is free to spin, and that's something kids (including us big ones) like to do when they see a wheel, give it a spin (at least me and my little dude like to!).

And, "No cat pictures. We had a guy, all he had was cat pictures."

And Seth, to be clear, I don't work in IT, I'm a UI artist in an engineering company. It was the head of IT giving me grief while assessing my need for new monitors. And he has a point - as the new guy, I don't want to look like a temp.

LOL Grant!!! You got me looking and looking at the poster... right? Mission accomplished!

The poster is getting framed with glass and a mat and will be hung in my office where I'll be able to look at it every day and change how I feel about it daily as well. Perhaps it will even be the centerpiece of a section of wall I'm planning to dedicate to my Rivendell bikes' photos. Currently I have two framed, the one I took on my first S24O to Mt. Diablo and the one of the Hunqapillar waiting for the train on a foggy January morning which I converted to B&W.

I was amazed when I read they'd sold over 600 prints "in the blind",
but had the same cringing reaction when I read about the cost vs.
price. Though it's not the same situation, it reminded me of all the
stories you here about small businesses getting into hot water after
offering a Groupon deal: they get stuck fulfilling an oversold deal at
a loss. I do wish that Riv had included a few more bucks of profit in
their price; every business needs margin to survive, and I'm sure most
of us would have still made the purchase at $23-25.

Maybe they could create a catalog item for "margin of goodwill" or
something for folks who would want to go back and chip in a few extra
bucks. Make it six dollars, and three goes to a charity.

Still watching the mail...

Aha---here's a tiny but significant piece of the mysterie pie-thing: As we sat around eating a triple-birthday party Indian lunch today between phone calls, I mentioned the Feet Thing, and Keven pointed out that during the shoot, the bike was held vertical with a double-leg kickstand, and the balance point of it was such that the front wheel was off the ground. So, we reclaim points lost to the Realists, and we mellow slack-cutters win, too. Milo was indeed turning the wheel, as you would, too, if you were two and a half.

The poster, and some other assorted bike stuff, is scheduled to arrive here in remote s.w. MO later this morning.   So, I'm curious to see it.

Also, I'm having some of my colleagues from work over this weekend, --- I'm a high school math/physics teacher in the middle of summer break;--  at school I'm usually fortunate enough to get to eat lunch with a group of art teachers (sculpture, pottery, drawing, design), -- it's the lunch group that'll be here.  I'm interested to see what they think of my new "art acquisition".

Having an actual art object to show off will be quite a contrast to most of my show and tell items at art lunches, -- cool proofs of math theorems, physics problems and so forth. . . .

Beastmonster kickstand was my first suspicion wrt to the feet

Just got mine today.  Love it.  Beautiful stuff.

Also, since I waited for the surprise, I of course now wanted to see it on the riv site and on the DLG site, and came across the description on the DLG site of the poster, and loved it, wanted to share:

In 1957 I was 12 years old. I had a paper route for the Sacramento Bee; I had a bicycle; I had money; I had freedom. That's pretty much what the bicycle meant in the pre-automobile era: freedom. Freedom from parental supervision, to be precise. Pre-automobile in the 1890s meant that there weren't any automobiles yet. Pre-automobile in the 1950s meant that you weren't old enough to drive. When you reached 16 and got your driver's license, you left your bike to your kid brother and cranked up the family Ford. Bicycles were children's toys, something you left behind when you attained a man's estate.

In the 1960s, college students rode bicycles because they were fast, cheap, and campus parking was free. The bicycle again became a symbol of youthful exuberance, anti-establishment hipness and freedom, only this time of freedom from the tyranny and expense of the automobile.

We have become as little children again, riding our bikes and having fun.
