on my new Grip Kings with no impact at all on my normal commuting time
or comfort.

Nice.

Birkenstock "Arizona" sandals are my go-to footwear 90% of the time in
summer. Light, leathered-n-corkified, grippy and I suppose fashionable
(also use GK's exclusively).

I pity the lycra warrior crazyfools trucking around the coffee shop in
clickity clackety SPD elf shoes!

God, how I hate snobbery on either side of the divide. If you want to
ride in flip flops or Bikenstocks, by all means do so. I like riding,
sometimes, in floppy Hawaiian shirts. But don't call those who use
retention systems "fools" -- that just shows resentment and meanness.
There is a purpose for retention systems, whether one prefers to forgo
it or not; just as there is a purpose for pneumatic tires and thinwall
tubing (Rivs are made of thinwall tubing).

Patrick Moore, who dislikes tight lycra but who won't call those who
wear it fools.

I just add pedal spikes to my Grip Kings last week, and find that they work well in keeping my feet on the pedals when encountering bumps in the road or when it rains; and the pedals are just a comfortable as when they were when I didn't have the spikes installed. And that's wearing either sandals, sneakers, or bike shoes (without clips or SPDs). I still like wearing my Ibex wool jersey and pants, but yesterday I rode to work in shorts (over my wool pants for added comfort) and sneakers. It's a real plus not having to carry a bunch of extra clothes and shoes for the office. And I agree, having to slog around a coffee shop in clipped bike shoes is a drag.

i make all my riding decisions based on impressing potential mates at coffeeshops: which is why i'd never wear flip-flops riding ;)

'Scuse me, Erik, but potential mates, of all shapes, sizes, etc., worth their spokes should have no problemas with foot nudity!

In my humble, inexperienced, poorly informed, iggorant experience.

Probably shouldn't look for dates out here in Honolulu in that case. :-)

I do something like this too.

Since I wear cleated shoes for my clipless pedals I impress my mates by walking around like a duck.

My mates seem not to notice but the other coffee aficionados do seem to take note. I'm uncertain but they seem
not to be positively impressed.
