Just noticed Grant's blog post from his trip to NYC.

I think it's really great that he looked at what must have been a literal sea of bikes and saw the small and strange things about them that nobody else would have noticed.

Cool, that's all.

Anybody want to help me decipher this?

The odd thing here is that the dropout shown is just a flat piece of steel that’s stuck into the slot, and the neat thing is how it forms a nice raised point. Raised points on dropouts are hard to create and really rare (we’ve done them on some bikes from Toyo, and customs). It’s neat to see that on this super cheapy.

What did he [you, if you're Grant :-) ] mean by raised points?

-Rex

I think it's great he had the nerve to post it. He's no doubt already heard from at least one person screaming about "hippies who hate capitalism and don't want to work". Good times.

He just means the top edge and the bottom edge of the dropout piece reach around the domed fork tube end and make a point.  I always thought that was done by squishing the tube end and the flat part is just the flattened out part of what was the tube.  No brazing at all.  I guess I was wrong about that.

Actually, I liked the photo of the person taking real, one at a time,
photos. Looked to be a 4x5 view camera. Any experts out there to
tell me what it is? (My very meager knowledge is 35mm and digital.)

Oh, and glad Grant was in New York to talk to folks about his book.
Am looking forward to that.

I have a fellow bike junkie who struggles with the NYC rat race every
day... the only thing keeping him sane is the nearly daily photo he
sends to me of some cool (old) bike that he sees locked up to a
parking meter along his daily walk to the office... I just get a
photo of the bike, along with a location... nothing else. It always
brings a smile to my face. The bike riders of NYC have true heart and
soul as evidenced by the bikes they rely on daily.

I hear that "occupy Walnut Creek" is supposed to kick off today.  Perhaps Grant can compare the two.

Gladly plan to occupy my bicycle soon, after a long day occupying work (also gladly).

As a follow-up, here are photos of the dropouts on my Pashley Guvnor (a genuine hand-made English bicycle):

And a video tour of the Pashley factory in Stratford-Upon-Avon:
