Did anyone here score the early Riv MTB the other day? Man, I was really tempted to bid on that one. If you won it, please post more pics!

Yes, please! I loved looking at those photos on the auction. What a total trip back in time!

I didn't get it, but tried and was only out-bid by a bit. I'd really
love to see some more pictures too, and learn more about the
geometry.

The whole disapointment in not getting it now has me wishing there was
still a comparable 26" Riv bike available. Is it my imagination, or
was it once an option to get a larger sized Atlantis (like a 58cm)
with 26" tires? (I know that the mtb was only a 55cm, but I was
guessing that it had a higher bottom bracket.)

Pretty sure that at least one of the current Riv models can utilize 26" wheels. If not, then Riv ought to do something about that.
Bike with 26" wheels are STILL da bomb, IMHO. They ride beautifully and offer comfort without sacrificing much in the way of speed or smoothness.

All of the printed material I have come across suggests that 56" was the 26/559 and 58 cm jumped you to the 700C/622 -

The only stuff I have posted on the Mountain frame is here:

http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/gen1/#mtnframe

(and there's a link there to a thread about the "Generation 1" frames.)

Come on, get a bombadil and ride the 650b wave! Then again for the price of a built bombadil you are almost at full custom prices. Can you just get the canti studs on a 58 set up for 26" wheels withouth borking the geometry?

650b is cool and all, but I agree with the 26'ers.

I don't have good technical reasons for loving 26 on bigger bikes, but I love them I do. One of my favorite rides in the past year was borrowing Alex Wetmore's 26" Gifford for a few days: it's essentially an XO1 with low trail. With the fancy Compass tires, I was equally happy on the road, trail, and even down a flight of stairs by the U district.

And for bikes in the smaller sizes, 26s make great sense. More sense than 650bs to me.

hard not to love that wheel size for a 52cm frame.

Thanks, Jim. That's pretty interesting. And not to question the
seller of the mountain bike (who I know is a list member), but the old
Gen 1 catalog excerpts you have posted leads me to think that perhaps
the bike on ebay was actually an early "All-Rounder." Here's a link
to a set of photos I just found of a bike that looks suspiciously like
the mountain bike in question, though it's newer. Some nice pics
here, which is I guess what we were looking for:

If the ebay bike was indeed an all-rounder, that would mean it had a
lower bottom bracket and steeper head tube, based on this Gen 1
catalog. The good news (for me), if that's the case, is that I'm
probably lucky I didn't win the auction. I have a 55cm XO-1 that's a
bit too small, and is what I was hoping to replace - but it would have
been too similar. The bad news is that I'm now left lusting to find a
used, early, 26" All-Rounder in a LARGER size, that I wasn't even
aware existed until a few minutes ago....
