Sam Hillborne's name

So I'm hoping someone here knows the answer to this. Where did Grant
get the name of the Sam Hillborne? Maybe this was in a past Reader
that I missed, or maybe it's obvious to everyone but me. I have a
60cm arriving shortly and names seem important an I thought I ought to
know where the name comes from (doubtless I will be asked). I can
come up with several possibilities, but thought someone might point me
in the right direction.

There was a Sam Hill known as the "Father of good roads" in the 1920s.
He championed the Pacific Highway. Could be a play on him.

Then there was a movie a while back, but I can't recall what the Sam
Hill Jason's last name was...

Easy. Sam Hillborne was a pioneer in making bicycles out of synthetic
non-metals, and in designing frames with extremely tight tire
clearances, and no way to mount fenders or a rack. I think he also
invented those CO2-cartridge tire inflation devices.

This reminds me:

I put Pasela 37s on my 26" wheel size Rambouillet.  They do indeed fit and man are they fun to ride. Yes, you have to let air out to get them past the brakes, but when you flat a tire, the air is already out. The RBW chart lists 33 as the max tire size in the smaller frames, and 37 in the larger (700 mm) wheel frames. It's nice to know you can ride (and look somewhat Atlantis like) on 37s in the smaller frames too.

Yeah, I ran 35mm tires on mine for a while--it made the bike actually feel a bit livlier for some reason. 

 

The newish Tektro "big mouth," brakes give enough clearance to remove them, FWIW...

Given that nobody really knew on this list where the name came from, I
took the suggestion above and emailed Grant. He got right back to
me. He says he needed a name that invoked a budget A. Homer Hilsen.
He wanted it to be a name that seemed like a non-nonsense kind of guy,
and that he likes NAME names for bikes.

So there you have it. :)

I guess I should be a bit offended that my new son's name Sam is considered a "budget" name.  Actually, I've always thought A. Homer Hilsen was at best silly, but I kind of like Sam Hillborne. Bearing you up hills and all.
