Hack Night is on Wednesday 24th August and will be hosted by the kind folks at The Project Factory (who'll also be shouting some food).

The plan is to do a mini version of the code retreat, where we pair up and tackle John Conway's Game of Life problem in several different ways (attempting it using a language, tool or technique you haven't tried before).

Wednesday 24th August 2011
6pm til 10ish

The Project Factory
Suite 305
50 Holt Street Surry Hills

Call David Parry on 0413 191 438 if you can't get in.

There's only room for 12 so sign up now over on the wiki:

See you there!

Cheers,
Josh

What languages/libraries are we likely to need?  Guessing everyone already has ruby/python/perl/php, but it might be an idea to install node/coffeescript.

I mention this mostly because installing Haskell takes ages…

Scientific American article on Life, written in 1970, by non other than Martin Gardner.  The rules are all here as is an announcement for a contest to prove or disprove a conjecture that no pattern can grow without limit (to be judged by Conway himself - reward $50).  Gold!

Your pair will have about 45mins to complete, so don't try anything too fancy! ;)

Cheers,
Josh

The fruits of me + @novemberkilo's labor : Conway's Life in
coffeescript with specs in jasmine (refactored after hack night, but
still true to spirit):

Here is the result of myself and @joshprice working our way through the problem using Coffeescript and Jasmine.
