Hi all,

I have just stumbled onto this group and I just thought that I would
send out a quick intro.

My name is Martin Ong and I have just recently started a new career at
PRA, an ITC recruitment specialist but I come from a development
background. I have worked in a variety of different areas within the
industry but love working with code, Google products and new
technologies.

I am a big fan of the Open Source communities in all its forms but
mainly come from a PHP development background. Since starting at PRA,
I have been hearing heaps about Ruby from both candidates and clients
so Im putting the effort in to learn whats so great about RoR and Ruby
in general.

Any hints and tips to a good starting place would be greatly
appreciated but as with any language, Im putting hours in on the main
Ruby documentation to help me get my head around the language. Any
other suggests for a good place to start?

Hey Dima,

Thanks for the link, that definately gives me plenty to go on and I
had not come across that post as of yet.

I will try and post an update once I get an app developed to share :)

Regards,
Martin

Hi Martin,

There's a lot of good Ruby books mentioned in that other thread, but
if you're beginning and looking to get into Rails quickly, the main
book would be:
http://pragprog.com/book/rails4/agile-web-development-with-rails

Ideally preceded by one of:
http://pragprog.com/book/ruby3/programming-ruby-1-9
http://www.apress.com/9781430223634/
http://www.manning.com/black2/

Cheers,
Chris

I actually found Ryan's book to be pretty useful for learning Rails. The focus on testing as an integral part of learning and development was different to other programming books I've read.

Personally I found the Ruby Koans to also be a very useful resource to learning the language. Once again the learning through testing approach suited me:
