I'm having an issue where it times out when I go to run the server.  This seems to be a fairly common issue people have, but I can't seem to find an answer that works for me, or I'm not sure what they mean in some answers?

(tg)boo!:sbin spencertachick$ ./rabbitmq-server start
ERROR
: epmd error for host boo!: timeout (timed out)

I have read on some boards to set 127.0.0.1 to localhost at /etc/hosts, but there is not hosts in my etc file.  I also tried to work with the rabbitmq.config file, but I only have a rabbitmq.config.example.  I removed example so that I would have a rabbit.config file, and uncommented what I hoped was the correct section, but still no luck.  What am I missing that is needed in order to run my server?

Thanks!

You hostname (is it really "boo!"?) must resolve to 127.0.0.1 or an IP address of one of your interfaces. Other cluster nodes should address it using DNS or their /etc/hosts files. Host name resolution is in no way controlled by rabbitmq.config (contents of which were not provided, too).

I'm not sure if epmd supports exclamation signs in host names, would not be surprised if it does not.

Finally found my etc/hosts file on os x, fixed the problem.  Thanks so much!

I am having a similar issue, but the /etc/hosts fix that is everywhere on google does not help.

ERROR: epmd error for host localhost: timeout (timed out)

I have tried, using rabbitmq-env.conf to use localhost, 127.0.0.1 and also my default (theme of my laptop).  none of them work... same error, different hostnames

My /etc/hosts contains:
   10.0.128.218 MyHostName
   127.0.0.1         localhost

Also, there are no logs in /var/log/rabbitmq at all.

Sometimes you have to also add the .local domain, like

127.0.0.1         myhostname
127.0.0.1         myhostname.local

I attempted that and did not help.  Also, the issue persists even when i change the rabbit hostname to localhost or even 127.0.0.1
