Hi all, need some help on basic problem.
I want to reinstall Qubes clean on 250GB SSD partition on my X220 tablet.
I downloaded the R3.1 ISO, gpg'ed it, all OK.
I used Rufus 2.7 according to qubes installation doc to create a USB install drive.
On two different USB media, I have the same problem. The install gets unusable just after having displayed the last inird massage, probably when starting the graphical interface: I have about 20 pixel lines (garbled graphics) at the top of the screen. Whether the X220 is connected to an external display or noit, it shows the same problem.
Any hints about that?
Any help appreciated.

Create the USB Installer via a Linux System with DD .. I tried several times to use Rufus in DD-mode with different USB-sticks, it never worked.
The stick was created without an error message, but during boot it always hangs,
Using DD on Linux worked the first time.

I tried to dd from cygwin to a USB drive. The USB was not readable, even from cygwin although windows indicated it was bootable, and unsurprisingly it did not boot.
I will try using a ubuntu liveCD.

Has anyone succeeded in creating a USB boot disk from Windows?  Which tool did they use?

I got like the same problem at R3.1
It's not totaly like you describe it. But I'm also can not install new R3.1

I think the problem with graphic card support, while I got the error about it.
Do you dried verbose mode and look at messages at your console or log?

===============================
p.s. I does not know why developers of Qubes focus on new features and Windows 10 support, when tons of users can not use the system and install it on there machines at all!

I does not know why somebody want to install spyware by Windows called Windows 10 on Qubes. But it's not primary task! I'm totaly sure about that.

Yes, I want to have Windows installation on Qubes to easy migrate to Qubes for Windows 7. But I can use HWM Windows 7. Or maximum Windows 7 tools! It's enought for totay.

I want windows 10 only to use windows 10 only programs, its really the only reason. wine just never works for me. and windows 10 not 7 only cause windows 7 is eol in 3 years for security updates, and if i want to go online i need a key and most likely i won't be able to get 7 anymore from a reputable dealer unless I get it preinstalled and I just want a key.

windows 10 might not keep you safe from microsoft and their friends though lol. But they can be made pretty secure against everyone else. and i have to say even from themseleves with their own tools still. its still all about what the user does nowadays I guess, even though its really less true to a certain degree. But really does come out when using qubes. The "opsec" still matters greatly and they are purposefully unmasking about it. I mean qubes developers really try to not give you a false sense of security lol. So it is what it is no matter what you are using really.

I'll answer my own question ;)

This past weekend I downloaded and installed Qubes 3.1.  This is the procedure (after verifying signature/hash etc) I followed:

- installed Rufus from PortableApps.com
- dragged and dropped the Qubes 3.1 ISO file on Rufus
- changed the type to DD from ISO
- "burned" the file to a 32G USB drive
- booted the computer up, selecting the USB drive.

This was on a HP 850 G1 that has a SATA SSD with Windows 10 Pro, plus an empty M.2 SSD.  I installed Qubes on the M.2 SSD.  Now I can select the boot drive via the BIOS, and not worry about Windows overwriting grub or visa versa.

Just to be clear, installing from a USB created with Rufus worked perfectly.
