Having been unable to boot into any of the kernels (graphics issues, it
seems), I tried booting into "basic graphics mode." This is successful
until time comes to choose Standard partition/LVM/BTRFS (I've tried all
three). It is at this point that I run into the error listed in the
subject line of this email.

I already reported this issue on QubesOS/qubes-issues at GitHub (so for
pictures, please consult
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/1161).

I will also mention that I run into a non-fatal and seemingly
inconsequential error when choosing the installation source which can be
seen in the 4th picture down on the GitHub thread and which I will type
here for ease of reference:

"Exception yum.Errors.RepoError: RepoError() in <bound method
YumBase.__del__ of <yum.YumBase object at 0x7effb7565f10>> ignored"

and

"Exception yum.Errors.RepoError: RepoError() in <bound method
RepoStorage.__del__ of <yum.repos.RepoStorage instance at
0x7effb69e1878>> ignored"

Could be nothing, but I mention it anyway in case it is related.

P.S. I am not dual-booting—once it works, this will be the only OS on my
Macbook (it is currently OS-less).

Installer in "basic graphics mode" doesn't have password prompt dialog
implemented... I think the only way to pass is there is to use kickstart
file. Take a look here:

Thank you for that, Marek. I have never heard of Kickstart before. Am I
correct in assuming that it's going to involve building a custom ISO? Is
there anything "special" involved in the Qubes/kickstart process? This
is all very alien to me, unfortunately. At least I'm a good Googler.

P.S. In attempting to verify your email, I got "bad signature."

You can provide kickstart file on separate storage, like USB stick.

In %packages section place something like:
@base
@base-x
@fonts
@hardware-support
@qubes
@sound-basic
@kde-desktop-qubes

Other than that, it should be standard kickstart file.

> P.S. In attempting to verify your email, I got "bad signature."

Strange, the copy I've received through google groups seems to be ok...
But google is known to mess with emails, even when signed (like adding
footer or so).

One final question or two, if I may: I'm having trouble finding a
standard kickstart file. Unless I'm misreading them, every resource that
I've been able to find on the subject seems to imply that such a file
needs to be generated from scratch somehow. I was able to get my hands
on a Scientific Linux 6 kickstart file, but it had a lot of SL-specific
options that I was afraid would brick a Qubes install if left in—but I
also didn't want to brick it by commenting out something important.

It also occurs to me that I have no idea how I would direct the basic
graphics installer to a specific file, OR at what stage in the process I
would be able to do this.

If one is in the shell, what command+options would one use to load the
kickstart file? The "linux ks=foo" command that I see on the pykickstart
page is not available in the Qubes installer. I can mount the USB
containing the modified kickstart file, but it seems that actually doing
anything with the kickstart file is a bridge too far for me.

(Parenthetically, does invisiblethings have plans to add a password
prompt in future releases?)

Take a look here:
https://github.com/rhinstaller/pykickstart/blob/master/docs/kickstart-docs.rst#chapter-8-starting-a-kickstart-installation

For example it may be "ks=hd:sdb1:/qubes.ks".

In boot menu you need to press TAB and append this option to linux
cmdline (before "--- initrd.img").

Text mode installer is really low priority, so probably not in the near
future.

I was FINALLY able to tweak the kickstart settings such that I was able
to install Qubes. For the record, these are the settings I had to use
for my late 2008 MBP 5,1:

# System authorization information
auth --enableshadow --passalgo=sha512

# Use CDROM installation media
cdrom
# Install OS instead of upgrade
install
# Run the Setup Agent on first boot

# Network information

# System timezone

# X Window System configuration information
xconfig --startxonboot
# System bootloader configuration
bootloader --location=mbr --boot-drive=sda
#Root password
rootpw --lock
# Partition clearing information
clearpart --all --drives=sda
# Disk partitioning information
part /boot --fstype="ext4" --asprimary --ondisk=sda
part pv.1 --fstype="ext4" --asprimary --size=296685 --ondisk=sda
--encrypted --passphrase=obviouslyimnotgoingtoincludethis
volgroup qubes --pesize=4096 pv.1

Now, I'm even able to boot into the loading screen where I'm given the
various kernel options. But that's where the good news ends. I have
chosen every kernel, and they all lead me to the same place: a screen
that is completely blank except for a flashing cursor in the
upper-left-hand corner. I've had it on for 34 minutes now. That flashing
cursor is still flashing.

A Google search leads me to some advice that would seem to imply I need
to rescue the system (something went wrong during the installation,
obviously, but I have no idea what that could be and I've reinstalled it
twice now), but when I attempt to rescue the system using the install
DVD, I get the same "no bios dp data" screen that led me to use
text-only installation in the first place.

Any ideas? Did I screw up my kickstart file?

I assume you've tried also 3.19 kernel there? Try to edit options there
('e' in grub menu) and remove "console=none" and "quiet". Then boot the
entry with Ctrl-x. You will probably see some more details.

I'm pretty sure the 3.19 kernel is the default kernel, but either way, I
have made a point of attempting to boot into each of the kernels.

After following your advice above, the final line on the screen (after a
series of those "[ OK ] Starting..." notifications) before it hangs is
this:

"bridge: automatic filtering via arp/ip/ip6tables has been deprecated.
Update your scripts to load br_netfilter if you need this."

I can't imagine that THAT could be what's causing Qubes not to load,
could it?

I don't think so...
If that's before mounting root filesystem (i.e. still in initramfs), you
should get a shell after ~2 min timeout. If that's after mounting root
filesystem, try to find out which service is starting (line
"Starting..." without following "Started..."). Are you able to switch to
tty2?

Actually, I was able to create a user account when I installed it, so I
just used that (was it wrong/insecure of me to create a user account, by
the way? It's an admin account).

If by "admin" you mean "user able to sudo to root" - yes, its done by
default in Qubes :)

I see nothing related to nouveau driver here... Maybe its not loaded at
all? Or do not support your hardware.
Try to load it manually: modprobe nouveau
Then check for new kernel messages.

Is there a better/more informative way to check for new kernel messages
than dmesg? I ask because there is nothing new in dmesg's output after I
do "modprobe nouveau" (I do "cat /proc/uptime" to make sure the times
match up). In fact, the last thing that dmesg records took place not long
after I booted. I am talking specifically about the "automatic filtering
via arp/ip/ip6tables" message I mentioned earlier.

Not really. You may clear message buffer with `dmesg -c` to better
distinguish new messages.

If nothing new shows up, your GPU is probably not supported by this
particular module. Have you tried some other Linux distribution?
Especially it worth trying Fedora 20 (LIVE) as Qubes dom0 is based on
it.

I've run several distributions on this computer: elementary OS, Ubuntu,
Xubuntu, PC-BSD, and OpenBSD. Most recently, I ran Fedora 22.

However, I often have to disable acpi or boot into basic graphics mode to
install these—Fedora 22 booted into basic graphics mode, but when choosing
"basic graphics mode" in Qubes I get something like "X failed to
start...installing using text-only mode" (hence my needing to use
kickstart).

Any graphics issues I usually have with Linux distros are typically
resolved by installing the appropriate Nvidia drivers, and I'm wondering
if that's what needs to be done here. I'm not quite sure how to do that
here, though, since I have only the command line. Especially with
Ubuntu/Xubuntu, I would just wait for "available drivers" to populate and
then automatically install the Wifi and graphics drivers.

Any tips on how to install the closed-source Nvidia drivers from the
command line?

So I downloaded a copy of Fedora 20 and tried following the instructions
on https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/InstallNvidiaDriver/ in order to get a
desktop enviro running.

I wasn't able to get the "rpmbuild --nodeps...etc..." command to work,
though (in fact, I wasn't even able to personally make sense of what it
does—there simply was no file with that name), so I'm hoping that I will
be able to make do with the RPM files I was able to download.

Not so, thus far. The problems seems to be an inability to install in
dom0. Even though I'm trying to install these rpms LOCALLY from a USB
stick, I'm getting this:

failure: repodata/repomd.xml from qubes-dom0-cached: [Errno 256] No more
mirrors to try. file:///var/lib/qubes/updates/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno
14] curl#37 - "Couldn't open file
/var/lib/qubes/updates/repodaat/repomd.xml

Is there anything I can do to get it to install without trying to fetch
stuff from the servers? For the record, I'm using the command "sudo yum
install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-blah-blah-blah-1353325.rpm," though I also
tried "sudo qubes-dom0-update xorg-x11-hklaghjlawhtruilu452tw.rpm"

Suggestions?

Can you confirm this last line was a typo? You've supplied pv.24 as a partition name to the volgroup command but at this point you have not defined pv.24 anywhere. I got an error when I attempted this.

Shouldn't it be:

part pv.1 --fstype="luks" --ondisk=sda --size=243695
[...]
volgroup qubes --pesize=4096 pv.1

...right? That change made it work for me.

Thanks for this sample, I wonder if it could not be included in the Qubes documentation anywhere, since Kickstart is now the only way to install if X.org fails. Anyway, without it, I would have been totally at sea.
