I've run the "Check" utility in Prey and got a "API key not valid. Got 401 status code" error mesage (see attached screen shot).  It suggests that I check my e-mail to verify my account which I've done twice already.  I've also deinstalled and reinstalled Prey with no luck.  I've also deleted the devise and added a new devise (same laptop) with no success.  My ASUS laptop is running Windows 7 - 64 bit.  I've successfully installed and used Prey on two other laptops.  My McAfee firewall is allowing Prey in its "rules", but I've also totally shut it off and still having this problem.  Any suggestions?  Thank you.

Do you have three devices showing on the control panel (Prey’s website)?  If so, is one of them for this computer?  There is a limit of 3 devices with free accounts.

Make sure that the file c:\prey\config has the correct two strings listed next to the api_key='keyhere' and device_key='key here' entries.

You can find your api key on the Account (https://panel.preyproject.com/profile) page, on the left edge.

You can find your device key on that’s devices page.

After making that change, run the check mode again and see what happens.

I have the same problem, but with a Dell Vostro 1700 laptop running Vista 32 bit (64 bit architecture running 32 bit OS). However, I have only one device and it shows "Device Still Unverified" in Control Panel. When you wrote: " Make sure that the file c:\prey\config has the correct two strings listed next to the api_key='keyhere' and device_key='key here' entries. " were you talking about registry strings? I have

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

                SOFTWARE

                                Prey

                                                                (Default)              REG_SZ                                (value not set)

                                                                Delay                     REG_SZ                                120000

                                                                Path                       REG_SZ                                C:\Prey

I couldn't find any "strings" ( correct two strings listed next to the api_key='keyhere' and device_key='key here' entries.) I have done all the steps as GSTgst and still have the same trouble...any advice? Am I looking in the correct place? I've also searched the entire registry for api_key='keyhere' to no avail.  Thanks...

The config file is just a text file, open c:\prey\config in notepad or a plain text editor. About 30 lines down you'll see the space for the keys. They are also shown in the control panel on the left of the device & account page. Make the text file match the control panel values.

PC's usually have issue with connecting back due to a firewall or built in antivirus/ malware/ internet blocker.
The FAQ has some info on the firewall setup.

Also run check mode…
http://support.preyproject.com/kb/troubleshooting/running-prey-in-check-mode
& post the output here for deciphering.

It's possible it could also be a proxy on your network, are you on a corporate/ education/ network that may be blocking certain sites?
