Hello,
So the saga of my land line continues as BT was here for half of yesterday trying to sort this mysterious intermittent broad band problem.
Latest theory is skip lorry has reversed into pole and crushed the cable and of course this will take well into the next millennium to get sorted.
So am think of alternate plan for for domestic broad band by going fixed mobile and dumping my land line completely.
I have a mobile data USB stick but this only does one PC without setting PC up as a bridge.
So is there a box/gadget that i can pop a SIM card into and have Ethernet come out off, so i can plug it in my netgear switch?

Hi Ian
beware of internet tethering caps and filters.... I got blocked using my old samsung phone when i tethered my internet...until I found a workaround ;)

so I'm paying £12.95/month for an all you can eat data plan with three....I get 4g Interwebs when I'm in stafford and can download at close to 50mb/s..... but I've had a tethering cap as soon as I share my internet with my laptop...
Solution that works (for now):
I use a chinese phone/tablet that I got off aliexpress to 'share' the internet using an app called pdanet+.

I use a no-brand phone-tablet and not my phone to share the internet is because they can't catch your headers this way because these dual-boot devices also have windows on them - therefore after registering a no-name dual-boot chinese tablet with three they have to disable their tethering filter on my sim card It's a simple work-around for internet almost anywhere without that tethering ban ^_^

Archie, didn’t  realise there was a tethering ban.

So how does the network know your tethering by lack of movement between cells?

Your  laptop's packets are forwarded through your cellphone to the network.  In the HTTP headers, information is passed from your laptop to the server and back. This is  how the server knows what characters you can display, what browser you  are using, how large or small your display is, etc,

Check to see the HTTP header information ... it gives you an idea of what all is  passed from the client (your laptop or cellphone) to the server, and  back:

List of HTTP header fields

User Agent is one of the key fields used to determine if someone is tethering their cellphone.

When you initially register your phone to the network, your phone's number (MSISDN) is mapped to a group of phone users.  All users in that group are allowed and not allowed certain services, features, data rates, a connection to the Internet, to certain cloud servers, etc. etc.

Policies are enforced in the network using DPI or Deep packet inspection

So ua switching would mitigate it (whilst forcing you to view mobile sites)??

I don't know about switching or spoofing the headers... I tried using a mobile-only browser (horrific experience...all the pages have tiny images)...
The only other way that kind of worked was to find a mast that wasn't under any significant usage - so you wouldn't be as likely to get capped as you would say in the middle of stafford town center

So guys what I want to use is Tom TP-Link USB to Enet, would that work as a tethering site on 3?

I know there's a repository for kali linux that allows you to discretely browse by monitoring and then duplicating the headers here's a link that shows you part 1 of how to do it...http://www.howtogeek.com/68999/how-to-tether-your-iphone-to-your-linux-pc/

I still say, quickest way, is to use a chinese mobile phone that dual-boots windoze, tether all you need as it's 'technically' a phone/tablet.

BTW you may ask how I am inetting, well as mentioned skip lorry backed into Tpole and crushed the cable.

So inet was most unstable all day, but working ok now.

Think during day the pole warms and expands and breaks the connect as when it cools at night and shrinks it works again ;-)

Archie,

So how do I connect the phone/tablet to mu other PC’s?

Things is this house is wired for enet in every room.

So currently I have router and netgear router in garage and from there it is hard wired into every room.

So what I was thinking is to just get a 4g usb modem and plug that into the T-link and T-link into my netgear switch via Enet.

Hence what I have done is to remove my unreliable phone line BB router etc  and replaced it with a 4G modem

Nice thing about this is that if I am roaming I can just unplug my 4g usb modem and take it with me.

Looks good Ian.

I haven't used any of the 3g / sim card routers, but tplink are usually OK.

you'll have to buy a sim only deal with tethering enabled, that's probably something to look for specifically in the small print, I can see why the comfort of the 4g modem would suit. I'm at work right now tethered via my phone/tablet, I find that wifi takes around 8ah per day to run for 8 hours consecutively so I usually bring a booster battery pack with me to make sure i've got the internet. :)

You can also turn a window down pc into a hot spot.  Check out WiFi router plus?

Alternatively if using a Windows 10 machine it van be a bit messy but a old windows machine all a over the top router could work.
