Looking around at creating my own keyboard or purchasing the one from Italy I'm noticing
many of the steno machines being sold under $150 on ebay that are also Real-time Capable.

Will the Stentura 200 SRT work with Plover and not use the paper?

I'm reading that these are listed as student machines but the one I'm looking at was in professional use
by a court reporter for three years.

Thanks
Bob

Hi Bob.

I've just purchased a stentura 200 SRT and it works great with plover. If you don't want it to use paper, you can just take the paper and ink cartridge out. The only tricky thing is that you'll need both the original cable and a serial to USB adapter. You might have to also play with the Baudrate. Mine worked at 9600, someone else's worked at the setting below that. Make sure that your serial-to USB cable works with your OS as well.

Best of luck,
Elliot

The used srt keyboards are a pretty darn good bargain when they work with plover.    Cheaper than an assembled stenoboard and with a proper keyboard.    I'll be surprised if the stenosaurus isn't closer to $400 by the time they have finished tallying up the costs.   It is pretty darn expensive to manufacture a keyboard in small numbers.   A really nice 60% nkro qwerty custom keyboard runs around $400 all in.   A steno keyboard has less keys but keys and switches aren't readily available.

Thanks Elliot,

I'll look through the photo's again. The one I'm looking at had both DB9 and the Standard USB plug on the back.
I have plenty of Serial to USB adapters, just don't like how clumsy they are at times.

Even tossed the idea of making a PCB board for the key switches and fitting it to work on an older mechanical ones.

I know. Too much time on my hands. This is something I'm tossing around to keep myself busy during supplemental years.
I've done a lot of volunteer voicing audio books for Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic(Now Learning Alley) and thought
closed caption could be a good career change option for me.

Hi Robert,

For the tooling costs etc. they are looking at, I was thinking the same thing.
As an electronic hobbyist it shouldn't be too hard to build my own.

Hi Robert,

On the stenosaurus. Those Key switches they get from Canada are only around $0.30/ea delivered
for 200. About $6.60 per keyboard unless they order the 4800 pieces, then it will cost less, then
there is the exchange giving extra $0.15 per US dollar.

There is a US location that has them

Or $5.88 for 5 pack or $37.00 for 110 pack in the US + shipping. I just ordered the 110 pack. I'll
create the PCB. I etch my own. So maybe I can have myself a working test model in a few month's.

I found an old stenotype and I'll work to pull a lot of the guts out and put the electronics with the
arduino board setup in.

Then I'll only need to make sure I have a spare setup with me for any breakdowns to be
redundant to avoid much down time during any needed repair.

Then if I can get Plover to run on Android since there is a way to run python scripts, I can eliminate
the need for a pc and have it stream directly to other tablets in the room. Maybe $200 - $400
total functional setup.

USB Hub to put sticks in for backups or copies.

Bob

StenoIME (by the amazing Brent) is a sort of Plover clone for Android that works pretty well: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brentandjody.stenoime&hl=en

I use it with the Stenoboard all the time. Just needs a USBOTG adapter.

Hi Mirabai,

I saw that one. It's not really what I had in mind. I want to attach the stenoboard
to the tablet the same way it does not to a laptop/PC.

I can get arduino to talk over bluetooth or wirelessly to my tablet now unless it's
required to use cables for stability reasons.

I think it would be better if Plover is actually running on the tablet.

My first step is to get the keyboard bought/built first so I can start learning. Then
all the rest is secondary.

Bob

I would recommend at least leaving the ink cartridge in there; otherwise you run the risk of damaging the platen (that rubber thing the paper sits on).

I don't know how much it will be to replace that, and the bits of the writer that strike the platen, but I do know I don't want to find out, so I just leave my ink cartridge in the writer.

You can also make a loop of paper to leave in the writer to help protect the platen as well.

That's good to know.

If I go the older type only I would gut out all but the keys/levers anyway and
put the electronics in and have the levers touch the contacts on the PCB.
