Hi all,
Check out this neat citizen science activity Crawford Stewardship Project has been working on to identify sinkholes in their area: "This is key in getting our government institutions to recognize the sensitivity of our landscape and watersheds."  The event facebook page has some more information on the project.  Looking forward to hearing more about the project and how others might be able to do it!

Best,
Stevie

Karst Citizen Science

Photo of volunteers identifying sinkholes at the Prairie du Chien City Hall!

Thank you to all who volunteered at our karst citizen science event on November 3rd in Prairie du Chien! During this event, in roughly 20 volunteer hours (not counting training time) we managed to classify nearly half the points (660 of 1354) on our map identified by our algorithm! Thank you!!! On top of the 45 probable and 9 possible sinkholes identified in the 5’+ range last year, we identified an additional 111 probable and 43 possible sinkholes in the 2’-5’ range at this event. Importantly, this number of identified sinkholes in Crawford County (even excluding the "possible" sinkholes) makes us a high density area for sinkholes. This is key in getting our government institutions to recognize the sensitivity of our landscape and watersheds. Check out our work so far: http://apps.legiongis.com/karstography

Support Crawford Stewardship Project’s vision come #GivingTuesday !

Image result for giving tuesday

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving powered by social media outlets.

Empowered communities in sustainable relationship with thriving ecosystems. Our vision keeps our focus clear when we step up to question the forces that are pushing undemocratic unjust polluting and extractive systems on our rural communities.

Our vision is why we map sinkholes and why we attend regional hearings. It is why we test for water quality and why we rally on the capitol steps. It is why we are asking for your support.

Will you help us make our vision a reality?

Lastly, your support for our inspiring vision will be doubled!  Thanks to a generous anonymous donor, every tax-deductible dollar you donate will be matched to double your impact.

Attention Hunters: The DNR has Chronic Wasting Disease Sampling kiosks

In various areas of the state, kiosks may be available as a sampling station option. The kiosks are set up as self-service 24/7 options for dropping off your deer head to be tested for CWD. A head can be brought to a kiosk up to five days after harvest if kept cool, longer if frozen. Some kiosks have freezers but not all. Kiosks may not be checked over a weekend so it is best to avoid using a kiosk at the start of a weekend if the weather is predicted to be warm.

When using a kiosk the following steps will need to be completed.

  1. A datasheet with the customer ID and harvest location identified will need to be filled out.

  2. The head will be cut off and placed in a bag with the datasheet.

  3. Antlers will need to be removed from bucks.

  4. Heads are picked up routinely by department staff and entered into the normal processing of all CWD samples.

More information can be found here.

If you know of any drop off locations closer to our area or would like to volunteer to start one, please let us know!

Show Your Support for a Statewide Moratorium on the Construction and Expansion of Industrial-Sized Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations in Wisconsin

With the support of various conservation groups and individuals, the Sustain Rural Wisconsin Network is leading action and unity against attacks on our natural resources.

As Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) have increased across the Wisconsin landscape from 50 facilities in the year 2000 to over 300 in 2016, it is more necessary than ever to put a stop to the Construction and Expansion of Industrial-Sized Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations in Wisconsin. Along with the increase of CAFOs, degradation of our Wisconsin landscape and waterways have become more apparent and is an issue concerning all Wisconsin citizens. It is time for all Wisconsin’s governing bodies to put the health, welfare, and safety of their constituents first by enacting policy and ordinances to protect their communities and residents.

Please encourage your local Town boards, County Boards, and any organization you are a part of to join us in supporting a Statewide CAFO Moratorium.

More information can be found here.

Please share widely.

Ways to share and be involved:

1. Take this resolution in support of a CAFO moratorium to your town boards, county boards and city councils and ask them to pass it: https://sustainruralwisconsin.org/resolution-in-support-of…/

2. Are you a County Board Supervisor, a City Councillor or a member of an organization? Consider becoming a co-sponsor of our moratorium request. Sign up here: https://sustainruralwisconsin.org/support-the-moratorium-s…/

3. Are you a citizen who thinks a CAFO moratorium is a good idea? Sign our petition: https://sustainruralwisconsin.org/sign-our-petition-in-sup…/

4. For additional ideas, check out the SRWN's advocate for a moratorium page: https://sustainruralwisconsin.org/advocate-for-a-cafo-mora…/

Cool.

This is a huge issue in Florida and South Georgia. Duke Energy / FPL / Rick Scott are getting paid to put a large gas pipeline through karst / wetlands in Georgia and Florida, and they largely succeeded.

Apparently, Sabal Trail was ordered to put a pipeline through this sensitive area because it had always been avoided for pipelines.  It had been avoided because of the wetlands and karst geology.  But, you know, fracking and changes to expropriation law have made these projects more profitable, so they are able to just take people's land and pay off representatives.

But, more relevant to citizen science, Florida Geological Society has a project to take calls from the public and record sinkholes.

Florida Tries to Map Its Home-Swallowing Sinkholes
A predictive model will be used to map areas vulnerable to collapse

These data are not confirmed!  so there's lots of disclaimers on it, otherwise, legally, FGS might be liable for the precision of the information.

Here's a draft map of the data:

The data are not precise, so when we at GRN made a map of sinkholes, we did a density map by HUC 12, for the sake of assessing water quality impacts.

It seems that FGS has updated their map with "Sinkhole types by region" which is cool--that there are dominant sinkhole causes by area.
