Hello Everyone!

Come join us to chat about all forms of water (not just snow, but we can talk about that too):

WHEN:  THIS UPCOMING TUESDAY (FEB 24th) at 7 PM

WHERE: Parts and Crafts, 577 Somerville Ave, Somerville, MA (Thanks to the amazing Will and Katie!)

WORKSHOP / AGENDA: As always, the meetup agenda is open for whatever neat things you'd like to talk about or do!  But in parallel, we'll be leading a water conductivity workshop from 7:30 to 9 pm on the following:

- Road salt's impact (short-term and long-term) on our local environment
- How water conductivity might help us locate excessive local road salt inputs (and what else it might tell us)
- How to build, calibrate, and use your own DIY conductivity measurement circuit
- Ideas around making a useful web interface for performing DIY conductivity measurements

COOKING-SHOW-LIKE FUN:   At the end of the evening, we're hoping to put a sensor out in the snow to see if it will survive the cold til morning.

GEEK BONUS ALERT:  We just received a shipment of some lovely little wireless devices called 'Moteinos', which use the nifty new low-cost radios that George Gallant pointed out to us a few months ago.  It'd be great to form a little team to get live readings from our outdoor sensor overnight posted to the web, so that we know exactly when it gives up the ghost (if it does).

BECOME EVEN MORE FAMOUS:  There will likely be a film crew from London capturing some or all of the proceedings, so wear your best shoes (if you care to).

Feel free to follow up with any questions ...

Cheers!
Don

p.s.:
Ben & Laura -- please try to make it if the weather allows!
RJ -- want to try to pipe some readings online in a rough-and-ready way so we can see whether the sensor survives the evening?
George -- this might be too short-notice for you to come down all the way from Maine, but I'll be traveling up near the Portland, ME area in the near future ... it'd be great to catch up around water sensor tech!
Catherine -- would be great to get some Emerson College conductivity experts in to help us through the circuit building process!
Patrick HMark G, Jeff Walker -- if you can somehow make it, it'd be great to have you present -- especially to catch any flubs I make when talking about road salt!
Karen -- this is good practice for the Cape Cod Bay!
Heather -- this is good practice for Pebble!
Ali -- this is good practice for Gilgit–Baltistan!
Kate -- this is good practice for Mongolia!

Don,

I teach a Robotics course on Tues evenings in Maine. Have made no forward progress with water testing devices this winter.

Lowpowerlab.com has a number of tutorials and sample projects that connect temperature and humidity sensors to Moteino's and remotely monitor the readings. They also have some good forum postings about extending battery life in remote sensing devices.

George

Mr. Blair:

Unfortunately I can't make it tomorrow but I would like to build a diy conductivity probe.  Which research note should I reference on the public lab web page.  I am having a little trouble figuring out what is the correct guide/tutorial to follow.

Hi Matt!

Sorry --- the DIY conductivity circuit is definitely not located in the most obvious place, yet :) The main link to a description of the circuit is here:

And the tutorial for constructing your own is here:

That's the tutorial we'll be following this evening, more or less ...

Feel free to ping the plots-wat...@googlegroups.com, in particular, with any questions!

Cheers,
Don

Should the Coqui page be tagged "tool"?

alrighty. I am psyched to see this page because many folks have been looking for this info! i tagged it as a tool so it shows up in the tool list, to display the water quality list on the side, and to have a link back to open water at the top.
