Hi, all -- over at https://publiclab.org/wiki/timelapse and https://publiclab.org/wiki/photo-monitoring, we've been collecting info on trail cameras as a way to monitor polluters and pollution sites. These cost about $100 each.

But after seeing all the amazing cheap and weatherproof GoPro camera "clones" you can get, some with WiFi, and claiming 4K quality video, I wondered if the zillions of GoPro users out there have done any hacking to get them running for weeks at a time, and outdoors. I found a little bit:

Do other folks know more about this, or have other advice on ways to do long-term outdoor monitoring for somewhat under $100?

I posted this question here too:

I have a couple of GoPro Heros that I put 24hr batteryback packs on to short time-lapse of marsh inundation….

But I don’t think that is what you want… You really need motion triggered image/video capture.

I have done that with traditional wildlife camera traps. They can last weeks in the field and collect hundreds of images/video.

Hi Scott,
Your project sounds really neat! We've been working on using the trail cameras to take photos of stormwater sites in New Orleans, but one of the concerns we've had is that the trail cameras are larger and hard to disguise in the city (post on getting the monitoring equipment up, and post on the larger stormwater monitoring project). We're not as interested in the motion triggered photos the trail cameras have as we are in documenting the site over time -- rain events.

Could you post on Public Lab about your experience using the go-pro? I'd love to hear about what you did, any challenges you had, and when you might choose to go with the go-pro over a trail camera.

Best,
Stevie
