I have worked on RPI setup on recent days
I have two setups now both work automatically and autonomically (cellular modem)

1. RPI with Webcam
2. RPI with spectral workbench spectrometer (almost done)
  • It takes picture of light source every X minutes
  • The file is saved as JPEG and parsed
  • I have the values of the actual spectrum portion in the file, as it does not change, and it is being cropped accordingly.
  • The cropped image is parsed, all RGB values are summed in columns, so I have one line with sum of RGB values for each entry
  • The image is plotted automatically at plot.ly, after being calibatred with values I set before, as it does not change (https://plot.ly/~rsegoly/752/rgb-colors-fro-cropped201507021342/)
  • If there will be a way, I will upload the cropped images to spectral as well.
In both cases I used JPEG, I know it has disadvantages as data is compressed
What was important cor me is the process to be easy (for children) and automatically
