Hello New Gulf Coast Friends!
This is a warm welcome to a number of people who have recently joined onto the Public Lab Gulf Coast group. Welcome!

This group is comprised of people in the Gulf Coast who are interested in local environmental issues and the science that helps us to learn about them. Please feel free to use this group to share information, ideas and events. To send anything out to this group, email: plots-g...@googlegroups.com

As for our current ongoings. We are just now wrapping up a project that was aiming to map the Barataria Bay for land loss, specially in relation to the BP oil spill. Be on the look out for that publication soon!

The event invitation I just sent out is for another project we have that is working to learn how to identify pollutants (specifically oil) in samples. Here is a link to more information on that project. If you would like to join us at that event RSPV to this form

Finally, and what I think brought a number of new comers here, is the new Urban Water Project that aims to map restoration projects around New Orleans using our arial mapping tools. This project is kicking off in October with a potential training session sooner. Stay tuned!

Welcome and looking forward to meeting you in person!

Hello, master naturalists, and welcome to the public lab gulf coast list.

This is scott eustis, thanks for signing up.

If you are interested in credits, public lab will have an event this thursday for building a lot cost oil-detection kit.  we are still thinking about what needs to be in the "kit", but the idea is that, using low cost electronics, regular people can build a simple machine for detecting and reporting oil pollution in their local waters and soil.
Read more here:

read about some initial results here:

If you would like to join us Thursday event RSVP to this form

And if you like flying kites or making maps, we've got some monies from EPA to monitor urban waters and wetlands in new orleans. we haven't scheduled these mapping events of yet, but stay tuned.

From our Spring 2014 Grand Isle Field Trip:

If you have any questions about accounting for volunteer hours, ask me.  other questions about the oil testing kit, or mapping, ask the list.  cheers!

Scott
