[2.1.5-scala] server stuck after a while

it happens consistently but randomly - the server gets stuck after a while and refuses to respond. It seems to open a socket, but the log doesn't move and there is no reply to the client browser. Play will not reply at all after this...
 
The Ubuntu VM 'top' command shows the process goes to 100% CPU for a while - sometimes it stays there or goes back down until the next request when it goes high but no response.
 
This is the only funny looking thing in the thread dump - does it tell something to anyone?
