I was quite happily running Picasastarter on my laptop running Win 8.1 until July 1. Unfortunately my laptop had some disk issues and I now have a new laptop with a brand new copy of 8.1.  When trying to run in this new environment, I get a runtime error on startup whether running on local DB or NAS DB.

This is probably some recent change to 8.1.  There have been several glitches lately, probably as a result of fooling with the base in behalf of 10.

I am literally dead in the water without Picasastarter, so any suggestions welcome.  Also happy to test hypotheses, whatever.

Thanks, Peter

Hi Peter:
Does Picasa run if you run it without PicasaStarter?

The person just below you in this forum had the same problem.  Did you try my suggestions there?
To Repeat, There are sometimes problems installing Picasa version 3.9.140.239 if you have uninstalled it or another version, because it doesn't install the buttons folder and an ini file in the Program files Picasa folder hare is a link to a post on that showing how to get those 2 files:

Also be sure you have installed Dot Net version 3.5.x (whatever it is now) because PS needs it.

If you have trouble getting Picasa updated, look here:

Earl,

Thank you SO MUCH for your super responsiveness.  Now all working again. I was indeed missing the three files.  Because I had installed Picasa and Picasastarter on a brand new laptop with brand new 8.1 it didn't occur to me that the install would be anything but clean.  On the other hand, I moved a good drive from my old laptop to the new one as an "E" drive.  Maybe somehow Picasa install found some files there that kept it from installing new default.ini, etc.

Anyway, thank you, thank you, thank you.

Hi Peter:
You're welcome.

I wish we could blame it on the installer finding the files somewhere else or something, but the truth is they were forgotten in the 239 installer and I hope they fix it soon before we have a big mess.

Earl,

It appears to me that there were other files missing (or some other problem with install):  As I used Picasa I found that I could not sign on to my Google account (and thereby update web albums).

My solution, which seems to be working for now, was to follow the directions in this post:

https://sites.google.com/site/picasaresources/Home/Picasa-FAQ/picasa/how-to/how-to-install-a-previous-version-of-picasa

  1. I downloaded 3.9.139.161.exe
  2. then disabled internet access
  3. edited registry and changed \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Google\Picasa value to 3.9.139.160
  4. then ran downloaded update file
  5. after update (still no internet connection) I changed update setting in Picasa to notify but not update
  6. restored internet connection, it advised me update was available (which I did not install).

As I say, this seems to have restored order, although there are probably some missing updated features / fixes.  Do you think it's safe to now update over 161 on the assumption that it was missing files that was causing difficulties, not actually bad code?

If you think worthwhile, I can post this note to forum.

Peter

Hi Peter:
Well, Installing 239 over 161 should work correctly, at least it has for a majority of people (including me the first time, before I broke it in a few ways for testing then fixed it).

It won't hurt to stay on 161 for a few days and hope Google will fix the install problems and bring out build 240 or higher, but at this point, unless you update it might bother you every time you start Picasa.

Providing you don't uninstall 161 before updating and providing the registry key is still less than 239, it should update without problems and keep working like it always did.
