Hi Adam,
Thanks for the great questions. I'll answer them in order.
1. Why did you accept the nomination?
I accepted the nomination because I think I can help and I want to do so. I don't think it's constructive for me to keep watching and commenting on things happening here without making an effort to help, so I'd like a chance to influence some change.
Listen first. Mediate as needed. Moderate as a last resort. My plan is simply to facilitate more constructive work. Here are some ways that might be accomplished:
- Be more proactive about providing tl;drs for some of the things going on in the group. Right now a lot of information is spread across multiple threads and services, but it would be nice if people could see at a glance whether anything they were interested in was happening. There's a lot going on and it'd be a shame to miss something relevant. If this already exists somewhere, then I'd focus on making that more obvious. ;)
- There's no denying that the FIG has seen a fair amount of conflict lately, and its reputation in the community has been tarnished. As someone who travels to events all over the world regularly, I think there's an opportunity for me to advocate for the work the FIG is doing on the road which might help people get interested in the FIG again.
- There's a lot of discussion about the future of the FIG, and I want to make sure that people feel they can voice questions or concerns about it. It's not my role to say what the FIG should look like, but I'd like to compile everyone's suggestions and concerns to allow people to make informed and objective opinions.
3. Similarly, what do you hope to accomplish as secretary?
I want to see the FIG move past its issues, and I want people to start seeing the FIG as a unified body again. If I were to assume the role, secondary goals would probably become clearer.
4. At the moment do you see any reason why you would not remain for the full term?
No. I travel a lot for work which *could* create some delays, but most of this travel is to community events. As far as outreach and advocacy goes, I think this travel is potentially advantageous for the FIG.
5. Will you be able to keep a level head?
Definitely. I tend to approach most problems objectively (and appreciate when others do the same), and I try to approach inter-personal problems by not assuming malice where there likely isn't any. More often than not, problems are the result of poor communication and not malice. In cases where someone *is* being malicious, I try to understand why they feel the need to be personal. Perhaps they felt attacked first.
Thanks for your consideration! I'm happy to clarify any of my points if people have questions.
-Amanda
