Hi,

I really need some help. I loaded Perian and it messed up my iLife
filmes, iMovie won't even run, it's an absolute mess. I went to delete
it in ~System Preferences-> Other to the Perian tab, under the
installation it says it is "partially installed". So it won't let me
uninstall because it's not "installed" but when I tried reinstalling
it to delete it, the installation did not take.

It's messing up a lot of programmes and I really need to get rid of
it, please let me know if you have any suggestions on what to do!!

thanks ever so!

What does iMovie do instead of running?

Your problem is probably caused by installing Google video chat
support, some version of their installer made parts of the system
unwritable for other programs.

Try deleting ~/Library/QuickTime and ~/Library/Audio.

Hi, thanks for the reply!

I don't have Google video chat so I'm not really sure, other forums
online seem to point to Perian.

iMovie just starts, then stalls, then force closes the programme. I
read somewhere I can't delete ~/Library/Quicktime because
AppleIntermediateCodec.component and AppleMPEG2Codec.component are
crucial to the computer?

thanks again for the reply!

It looks like you are looking at /Library/Quicktime. The ~ in the
original path means that the folder is in your home folder, i.e.
/Users/<your-home-folder>/Library/Quicktime.

Hi, thanks for the clarification. I did just delete it where you said
and it's still crashing (cleared the bin and restarted as well).

Any other suggestions?

thanks!

Can you pop open Console (in Applications -> Utilities) and see if there's anything in there about what's going on?

Hi, Chris, thanks for the reply.

I cleared Console and tried to restart the programme and this is what
the log says below. It says 'image not found, but I know that
application is in there.

There are quite a few programmes that are not working. Should I create
a new user and delete my current one?

cheers for the help.

i did. it's not iMovie. It's all of iLife, I deleted the entire thing
and reinstalled, and it still does this.

Oh, PS - I did have a Blackberry but do not have one any longer. So if
it is a Blackberry file, I'm happy to delete it if you tell me where
it is.

cheers!

Yet another case where Perian is blamed for something that's completely unrelated. See the following:

That tells you exactly what the problem is; a library is missing. It also tells you where it is supposed to be exactly which file is depending on it.

That 100% means the iMovie install is broken. Maybe try installing it
to a more usual path like /Applications?
