Hi,

I was lucky to recieve the 2nd prize  "Landscape"  in the January 2012 competition. As I have heard nothing  yet, it is only natural that  I feel I may have been overlooked. I know a lot has been happening with changes to the website and without seeming ungreatful I wondered how long should I wait before posting my question again.

Kind regards,
gorrillagus.

Have you already been contacted by a Team member via e-mail? Have you checked the e-mail address associated with your account, including the "spam" folder?

There were some problems with the old prizes (they had to be manufactured again).
New winners should be announced this week
Gerard wrote us today that he hopes to get things done this week.

Hi everybody,
the same problem with my prize. I am the winner in March contest (My town). Since  I did not get any notification or e-mail, I put the question on the forum. I was told to re-contacting for a month if I don`t get an email from the team. Well ... here I am again.
No any contact, no any E-mail. I start to doubt the correctness of this competition. I would like to know if anyone ever got his prize. If there is someone who has (in his hands) his award, please write the details how it goes...like  how long he waited for the prize and  contact of the Panoramio team. This would help all the other "confused" participants.
Thanks ,
Svetlana

As the winner of the December 2008 Scenery contest I waited almost a year for my prizes, but Panoramio was a completely different animal then.

However the underlying point that patience is required remains and also it would help if you read the post immediately above your post!

The fun is in the taking part and receiving the kudos and/or pleasure of winning a prize. The actual prize should be secondary and a pleasant surprise when it eventually turns up.

Congratulations to you for your win in March from which it is no time at all to be waiting :)))

Thank you Nick.
I just wanted to meet one winner who already has his award. Nice to meet you, even your answer is full of sarcasm. It seems  that you are angry because I ask, and I don`t understand why.
Of course I read all posts about theme Im interested ... but.... can we believe if we read that November and Januar winners still don^t have their prizes?!

Should I feel guilty because I ask? Should I wait a year like you and ask nothing? Or it would be nice from "someone" to inform people who won? I didn`t even know that I won till I started to get mails of congratulations. If it`s take long time to get the prize, may I ask how long time takes to send just an E-mail.

I certainly was fun to participate even though there is no prize, but it is not fun to be cheated. Once again, I just wanted to know is anyone ever got this prize. Now I know that is, and Im calm, I have all time of this world.

Hi Svetlana,
first of all, congratulation to your photo and nice gallery!
I am not prize winner, but as I know, delivery of anything from Panoramio is a hell.

Just few remarks:
- site admins know your email address (you use it to login to Panoramio), so they they know the way how to ask you for other contact and delivery details.
- check your email (including spam folder) for email from Panoramio
- I think  prizes are not sent on monthly basis, but in 2 or 3 month batches (just a speculation), so one month of waiting is nothing
- some prizes are lost at customs
- some prizes are returned back by delivery company (FedEx), when they try to contact the winner and the winner does not reply promptly.

Examples:
- I waited for package from Panoramio (it was not prize) since November 2010 to March 2011.
- Other package from Panoramio (gifts sponsoring Czech Panoramio meeting) was delivered in less than two week, but I almost missed it, as I was not able to confirm documents sent by FedEx promptly during weekend.
- Part of this package was a prize for Magdalena Hudranova - she had won the contest year ago and received her prize just couple of days ago by means "man in the middle" (me).

Make your own conclusion... I think there is no problem with financial resources for prizes. But there is a small problem with sending itself and one big problem with FedEx.

I need to deeply apologize for my delay on this arena.
I was trying hard to have this completed by this week, but I unfortunately did not manage and despite I tend to cover my self with a priority speech (most of the time is true) this time I will only apologize.

I will be on holidays from the 15th of June until the 9th of July (it seems a lot but seriously I am not off the office for one year almost) and I do not plan to leave with open topics, otherwise I would be in the beach full of remorse feelings.

This means... I will communicate with all the ones I need to communicate before I leave and let everything done, at least in the contest arena.

Svetlana, first of all - congratulation!

And now to problem with prizes... You are winner of My Town contest in March 2012 - so you have submitted your photos during March. As far as I know, prizes (and rules) were upgraded in May 2012. So first winners of upgraded prizes (cameras) are winner of May 2012 contest. These winners are not published yet, so nobody know who are the winners, but at the moment one thing is certain: that's not you, as "winners are ineligible to win the contest during the 3 months following their win". You are a winner of GPS tracklogger + USB memory stick. No matter at what time the results of March contest were published. Prizes are announced for running contest. Changes in rules and announced prizes are not retrospective - although it would be nice in this case... Sony camera looks interesting ;-).
I think it is misunderstanding on your side... March results were published in May, when new prizes were on the contest pages, but these prizes are intended for May contest winners.

Panoramio Contest Updated

Each month Panoramio hosts a contest for the members of our photo community. The aim of the contest is to have fun with the proposed categories and to get a challenge in your photo excursions.

The contest had historically 4 categories, and starting this year we changed the process to offer new categories each month. We have also made some changes in the Site, like the newLanding page, that allow us to sponsor the best photos of the contest directly in Panoramio.

This month we have changed the prizes so the contest is even more attractive. The contest will have 5 runner-up that will have their photos sponsored in the landing page, and a first and a second prize that can win (conditions apply) the following prizes:

First Prize:  Sony NEX-7 Interchangeable lens digital camera
Second PrizeLumix TS3/FT3 waterproof digital camera

Svetlana, I think contest management is obvious... At contest "home" page, you can see announced categories for current month: Categories of the current contest (July)
also with link to current rules.

Middle section is about Prizes. Although not expressed explicitly, these prizes are also for current contest. This is most natural interpretation with regard to next section:

Winners of Past contests
We know, prizes are changed form time to time (aren't you regular contestant?). So currently published prizes cannot be valid for the whole list and e.g. winners in August 2008, when Sony NEX camera model does not exist.

Perhaps it would be handy for reference to have an archive of rules and prizes here, not only as change log in Blog. But who cares except the winners ;-).
And anyway, it's your task to check current rules and possible rewards before you enter the contest, is not it?

I know it's a bit disappointing - you were looking forward to modern semi-professional camera and now you are put down with simple GPS and USB stick, but - was not the moment when you realised you are a winner the best reward?

I saw it Draken, thanks.
Still was the text with this pics on the wall of March contest. It`s confusing that even moderators didn`t know what prize is actual.
Thank you too Tomas. Right, everything is disappointing on this contest.
Everything about this contest is done horribly wrong. Starting from obscure awards to irresponsible behavior, compliance, delays with prizes for  a year. As you already know I was very dissapointed from the start, finding that noone found any reason to write two words of congratulations, just to let us know that we are winners. And that was not just my case. For the short time I have met so many disgruntled winners.
I am the member for a long time and I allways thought that Panoramio was a serious site . Of course I feel disappointed. Not because of camera... as Nick Weall said : "The fun is in the taking part and receiving the kudos and/or pleasure of winning a prize. The actual prize should be secondary and a pleasant surprise when it eventually turns up."
He waited patiently his prize for a allmost a year. And he was surprised that I have dared to ask for a award after a month of uncertainty. We were supposed to keep quiet and wait when someone will be merciful to give us informations  (with a deep apology for the delay). In a country where I live (and as I see there lives also your boss),for  the delay must be a big reason. I respect it  and I expected that large corporations like Google and Panoramio also respect "all on time".
And finally, the prize that was published under the winner pics ,it`s  no longer that award. "Sorry but the awards delayed two months, and is all set in May when the awards were  changed ... even you saw your prize was camera, it was fatamorgana :).
What? Have you been disappointed with usb stick?!  Is not it important to participate ?!"
Is this maybe "Just For Laughs" gags?

No hard feelings...
I have to report all of this, because I believe that such a site must have a serious manager.
Perhaps someone else is able much better organize Panoramio.

It`s confusing that even moderators didn`t know what prize is actual.

We (moderators - at least some of us) know, what prize is current and even we remember which prize was current in March 2012 (although we need not to know it - unless we also participate in contest). And we gave you correct answer and advice.
Note:
Moderators are Panoramio users - like you. We have only some more privileges here in forum, and - in most cases - deeper insight of Panoramio heartbeat. And as we are volunteers, we need not to know everything about Panoramio. We are here because we like Panoramio and our participation is kind of fun and joy. We don't have boss ;-))) and we act individually.
More info also here:

You are right. Contest suffers by:
1) Abundance of off topic and low quality submitted photos (more than ever)
2) Prize distribution and delivery (long term problem)
Part of these problems lays within Panoramio, rest is outside.

No hard feelings...

OK, perhaps formal complain to Google will help to improve contest prizes distribution. I don't know what all is behind this hell with prizes distribution, so let's hope it can be improved... somehow. Or contest can be changed to "no-prize-winning" contest (which is OK to me). But I wouldn't tell Gerard is not serious manager.
P.S. as he is not my boss... I have no special reason to protect him - except the fact I know many other positive things he did for Panoramio. Damn, once I'd like to work together with man like he is!

I have been asking Svetlana to provide some  proof of what she affirms and she talks about a "wall". Sorry, this is not Facebook. Panoramio has a "blog", a "forum", a "contest page" (link provided by Tomas). That's all.

OK, there is no proof, no evidence to support what she alleges. So, why are we devoting our time to politely (and with proper information) make her understand she is wrong? She only thinks the prize was a camera, the blog entry proves it was not. What else does she need?

The updated contest for photos uploaded in May and beyond is a solution to this prize delivery problem. Less winners will receive prizes, in return the prizes are nicer. This will reduce Gerard's workload. A new carrier has also been chosen (Amazon) to ensure proper delivery to various countries. So, I think things will improve from now on.
I know the contest is a bit confusing. One month for nominating photos and voting the next one. Photos uploaded in March will be in the March contest, but voted for in April.

Svetlana Peric,
I agree with you.

It's very irritating that anyone can not see on the main contest page  http://www.panoramio.com/contest  which prizes belong to which competition! How can be seen that the shown prizes start first for the May contest? And why must one be a detective to find the blog by Mr. Sanz and then consider when the new prizes are valid.

Where are the prizes for the March and April contest described?

On the contest page with the winning images from the month would be titles for the 1st Prize, the 2nd Prize and so on, also very useful for worldwide participants.

Such websites are not a good reference, shame on Panoramio, please make it better!

Thank you all for your note. I see and understand your concerns. The prizes described in www.panoramio.com/contest are the ones valid for the month you are participating to the contest. This means if I participate in July and the prize displayed when I participate is a car and I win, I expect to receive a car. If that changes to a bike, I still want a car. The problem here is that this has gone the other way round and I understand it is easy to assume you get a car when what was agreed is a pen

The reason why we do not keep an archive of prizes is a UI reason, as we decided to keep the Contest pages to a minimum expression, as before they were confusing for some of you. We announced the change with total transparency in the blog and despite I am sorry this has been a bit confusing, I hope it is clear now.

Participation in the contest should not in any case have a material interest. The reason we give a prize is just a treat, and the moment this starts being a problem, I am more than happy to remove the prize. And in any case, the contest is just a fun feature of Panoramio and should not be the main driven. We may have some delays sometimes on it, as we are focused on delivering cool features to all of you.

This said, and despite I understand you will still be very angry with me, I am sorry for the confusion I see we could have done things differently and I keep the learning for the future in case we change the prizes again.

Playing detective? Why? The blog is the official announcement page of this website. The contest winners are announced there, aren't they? Almost all new features are posted there. What's more, there are very few entries per month. Where else do you want the information to be posted? In local and international newspapers?

Until 30th April the contest page announced which the prizes were (GPS logger and USB stick). Svetlana entered the photos knowing which were the prizes even though she insists otherwise. Sorry, she is confused. It was not until 1st May the prizes changed on the contest page. Two months later!!

Is it as if someone who won the prize in December 2011 and who hasn't received his prize yet wanted to get the camera because now the information on the contest page says so.

The truth is the information was available on the contest page when she entered the photo no matter how hard she insists the page said "cameras" in March. And the blog proves it.

Hello Draken,
I do not care who gets which prize!

And ...
No, to know the winners of the contest you need not the blog! The winners can also be found on the main contest page http://www.panoramio.com/contest.

A blog is just only a blog.

Please go to http://www.panoramio.com/ -> Menu: Community -> Photo contest
and read this paragraph at the end of this page:

Visit the main contest page for information about the current contest categories, prizes and winners of the previous contests

You have seen: ... for information about ... prizes ... of the previous contests

Note:
Distribute the prizes as you want. I criticize only that the information were inadequate and confusing on the main contest page.

As Gerard says, prizes should just be an extra. The honor of winning should be enough. Panoramio is a photo site not a competition, casino or lottery site.

Speaking of which: it´s impossible to retrieve (easy) at sites like that what the prizes were 4 months ago. Jackpots change sometimes 2 times a week and we have to trust the operators of those lotteries to be honest in giving away the right prize. I´d rather put my trust in the Panoramio admins.

The only thing that went wrong was the time between winning the prize and delivering, a fact for which Gerard apologized many times. I for my part can understand perfectly that the contest is not a number one priority for the team. Let´s hope the new way of delivering will speed up things so that misunderstandings like this will not happen again.

Just my opinion on this; Let´s move on!

If you are still reading this topic I would recommend the use of "serial commas" to avoid ambiguity (a comma after the word "prizes").

It should read: Visit the main contest page for information about the current contest categories, prizes, and winners of the previous contests.

There is a long discussion among linguists about the use of commas. Things are not a simple and clear as some want to present them.

At least I learned something. In Dutch you never enter a comma before and (you get shot if you do, or something :-) ), in English you can. never too old to learn. thx Draken (and Matthew)

And also in English English as opposed to American English, a comma is never used before and  no matter how many items in a list.

And that is 70 years of English English .

It is not exactly what the Wikipedia entry says. Some Universities, publishing agencies, and newspapers in the UK allow it when there is a need of avoiding ambiguity. Even one of its names is  "Oxford comma".

If you haven't had an email, have you checked your junk mail folder? If you have access to your email account through a web browser it may also be worth checking on there to see if a message has been handled as spam (some mail providers don't forward mail they class as spam).

thanks in advance for any good info.

Perhaps you guys can add something to the fine print of the contest page, something along the lines of, "Prizes may take 6 to 12 months to process." An email would have been nice, too, just to inform us that we won and that it will take a while to process the prize.

I don't mind waiting all that much, I just wish there was some sort of communication.

I may be many things, but anonymous I am not. I'll reverberate Timothy's post. Regardless if "Timothy" is a real person or not, the sentiment of his post is spot on.

The responsible person/persons at Panoramio really should bring all of this to close. It really is quite simple; either follow up on the promises or just tell us the promises will never be fulfilled. I could actually respect Panoramio telling me the prizes don't actually exist - I could accept that as truth, as it is evident that is the case. But I can not respect the message I've received thus far ... all empty promises.

Yesterday I communicated to the Panoramio moderators and today to the wider community that I have reshipped this week all the prizes from September 2011 until April 2012. This means that some will have received it 2 times, and for those who unfortunately did not receive it yet, should receive it in the next 2-3 weeks. Those are the prizes that included the USB and the GPS loggers.
For the prizes of May 2012, I have contacted end of last week the winners to get the final details I was missing so I can ship them the cameras this week, and for June onwards I shall get in touch this week, including the publication of the latest results.

With this I hope the issue get resolved. Again sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused and wish you all the best seasonal holidays.

Wim, since the beginning of this forum some users are "anonymous" in the forum, even one team member. For some reason this bug can not be resolved, this is entirely without the users responsibility. Above that Timothy uses his name under the post, so he is not more anonymous as other users who choose to use a nickname (nothing against that BTW).
