Hi,

I have a SDcard with the "XBMC" media-player image based on the blog
article here:
http://rsalveti.wordpress.com/2012/01/06/hw-video-decode-and-xbmc-ubuntu-linaro/

Yesterday, I did a "atp-get update" / "apt-get upgrade" and now
video-playback does not seams to work anymore. (I think there was an
upgrade of xbmc included).

When I play a video (e.g. video file-playback from RSS feed or from the
XBMC vimeo plugin) I get audio and a kind of "grey" screen; but no videos.

Youtube also has the same problem. (althou it didn't work at at before
the upgrade).

Anybody any simular results?

Cheerio! Kr. Bonne.

Yeah, it got broken after the latest syslink package update. I
reverted the change yesterday, and it seems to be working again.

Can you please run apt-get update/upgrade again and share your results?

Thanks!

Is this with XBMC or when using with Totem or any other gst-based player?

There's one issue with our current XBMC version, so it should behave
better with the new version we're about to upload.

My apologies, I should have been more specific.

I am using the linaro-tv xbmc pandaboard image from the Dec 2011 or Jan 2012 release, have since just used apt to update.

The problems with dropping frames is with XBMC. I'll watch out for any updates and report if the situation changes.

After the most recent update, xvid/divx seems perfectly fine but x264 video does not display, only audio plays while the overlay still shows. Stopping playback of such a video seems to hang XBMC.

Has the issue noticed by nlvr been confirmed by someone else? I have
the update pending, but now I'm hesitant... (not sure how I revert an
update, if it gives a problem)

Hi,

I also did an upgrade and seams to get the simular problems as nlvr
(althou I didn't really try all different video formats).

I guess Ricardo is the person who can initiate a rollback the most easy.

If somebody wants me to more tests on this problem or send debug output,
feel free to ask.

I see the same results with the SVT Play plug in, which is H264/AAC based. It worked OK previously.

When playing video content you get audio, but it stays on the menu graphics. When you stop the audio XBMC hangs.

Yes, I was also able to reproduce such issue with the latest packages.

I know Avik was updating XBMC again based on latest upstream plus
gst/eglimage enablement, but something I didn't yet check myself.

Please don't upgrade it for know, and we'll update the status again
once we know what the issues are.

Thanks,

Can you update your packages and give it another try?

I updated a few packages and finally got it all working on my board
again. Just tested getting 12.03 and running apt-get
update/dist-upgrade and after the reboot it worked fine :-)

Testing manually with gst-launch can also help understanding the issues, like:
gst-launch-0.10 playbin2 uri=file:///home/linaro/Videos/foobar.mp4

If it fails, can you also remove .gstreamer-0.10/ and try it again?

Thanks!

Can you update your packages and give it another try?

I updated a few packages and finally got it all working on my board
again. Just tested getting 12.03 and running apt-get
update/dist-upgrade and after the reboot it worked fine :-)

OK - just downloaded from http://releases.linaro.org/12.03/ubuntu/leb-panda/ the image file panda-ubuntu-desktop.img.gz and dd-ed it to an 8GB Class 10 SDHC card.

Booted - though on first boot got an 'Unsupported Resolution' error on my TV (which accepts all standard HD TV resolutions) after the usual stream of Linux booting information.

Hit the reset button - the machine rebooted and booted fine to the Linaro Ubuntu desktop.

Opened "Terminal" via the desktop and did a "sudo apt-get update" followed by a "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade"

Rebooted

Then did a "sudo apt-get install xbmc"

Rebooted

Logged out of the Linaro Ubuntu desktop, selected XBMC as the login environment rather than Unity or Unity 2D, logged back in, XBMC ran, went to the SVT Play plugin - and still get lots of flashing green and other coloured corrupted lines on video.

It seems to be a bit variable - sometimes it is worse than others. If it is relevant I am using HDMI audio.

I still get stuttering on video (720p and SD) after adding "echo 0 > /sys/module/drm_kms_helper/parameters/poll" to my /etc/local.rc file (and rebooting) - both on video and on the XBMC ticker crawl at the bottom of the screen.

Is there something in the above process I've missed?

Testing manually with gst-launch can also help understanding the issues, like:
gst-launch-0.10 playbin2 uri=file:///home/linaro/Videos/foobar.mp4

I tried the above with a couple of mp4 files and got GStreamer encountered a general stream error.

If it fails, can you also remove .gstreamer-0.10/ and try it again?

Yep did a "sudo rm-r .gstreamer-0.10/" and gst-launch still fails with the same error.

Not sure if this is relevant - but when on the normal Ubuntu desktop I'm seeing some video corruption in the terminal window - odd white pixels appearing on the black background on occasions.

So near - but yet so far.

I have video - but it is still corrupted.

I have a Pandaboard ES not a Pandaboard (in case this is relevant)

Also - another question. Does the Linaro Ducati firmware contain the MPEG2 decoder - I see the TI PPA announcement suggested that their Ducati f/w included MPEG2 decoding. (Great for DVB-T recordings potentially)

Additionally after a power down I've noticed that the XMBC ticker is now smoothly scrolling not juddering, but I still get the video corruption - strips of mainly green (though other colours also appear) appearing intermittently all over the picture.

More additionally - watching a 720/25p H264 / AAC video on SVT Play I get the following stats in XBMC :

fps varying from 7fps to > 30fps (presumably catching up?) CPU0 and CPU1 both sitting at pretty much continuously 99-100% when playing after a few minutes. Audio quickly drifting out of sync.

Appears to me that I'm not getting any hardware acceleration?

With this image you need to install ubuntu-omap4-extras-multimedia
first, so you can get the extra packages for hw video decode support.
If you grab the
http://releases.linaro.org/images/12.03/oneiric/linarotv-xbmc/
instead, just apt-get update/dist-upgrade should be enough.

After running apt update and dist-upgrade, then deleting ~/.gstreamer-0.10/, my install of ubuntu linaro-tv-xbmc seems to play back divx/xvid and .x264 without any issues.

Thank you for the update!

Just downloaded the 12.03 linarotv-xbmc build and done an update and dist-upgrade and it works!!!

Doing the parameter poll change to rc.local stops the hanging. H264 from SVT plays smoothly - with 720p stuff taking ~ 15% of each CPU.

576i SD MPEG2 in an MKV file (I have a lot of DVDs remastered to MKVs with extra subtitle tracks) appears to be zoomed and cropped so you only see a portion of the picture - and this is the area of picture that is altered by the zoom (z key) options - if I go to original size I see a portion of the MPEG2 picture surrounded by black.

DVD ISOs appear to give me just a full-screen of blue or green (with audio) instead of the menu.

But I'm really happy with the H264 stuff from SVT Play! I think this is the first time I've had proper hardware decoding with no judder.

Thanks all.

I'm using the suggested distribution, with all SW update specified.
Most videos are ok, but I have a problem with the following video
format:

VIDEO
Dimensions: 720x296
Codec: DivX MS-MPEG-4 Version 3
Framerate: 25 frames per second
Bitrate N/A

AUDIO
Codec: MPEG1 Layer 3 (MP3)
Channels: Stereo
Sample rate: 48000 Hz
Bitrate: 128 kbps

When I play this video with Movie player (login: ubuntu-2d lightDM),
the audio is reproduced but the video is black. Software doesn't
crash, it is possible to stop and play again.
When I play the same video with XBMC the software hang (it is
necessary to reboot the card).

In order to reproduce this video, is it possible to update the codec
drivers ?

But, the most important question is: Is it possible to manage the
error conditions in order to avoid to reboot the system when a video
is not supported?

Thanks !

I have found others problems to decode live TS streaming (UDP & RTP).

In my test setup I'm using a realtime h264 encoder that stream the
generated H264 transport stream (TS) via UDP & RTP, I'm using the
following XBMC live streaming XML:

<channels>

<thumbnail>http://live-tv-
stream.googlecode.com/svn/icons/news.png</thumbnail><items>

ENC UDP

<thumbnail></thumbnail>

ENC RTP

<thumbnail></thumbnail>

</items>

</channels>

In both cases (UDP & RTP) the XBMC video player is black, but the
audio is ok.

Codec informations:
VIDEO:
CODEC = AVC/H264
bitrate = 5 Mbps
Resolution = 1920x1080i 50Hz

AUDIO:
Codec = MPEG1 layer 2

I have tested two cases:

1) when the streaming is running, I can stop the player correctly.

2) XBMC player is running (no video, audio ok), then I stop the
streaming (UDP & RTP).
In this case if I try to stop the player, XBMC hang, and I must
reboot the system.

Seems to be a problem when we try to stop the video player in case of
error condition. In this case the system doesn't respond anymore.

xbmc(from linaro ppa) with omap-extras(from ti ppa) supposed to support HW acceleration on ubuntu 11.10.

With the latest update some of the SD videos play fine. I tried playing the following video and still see that the video is unable to play smoothly - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3vqf8nZZfc
