1963 (t) Jeffrey Steven Rensselaer Barter (57)
Monterey
County Herald, CA May 18, 2002, page B5
Jeffrey Steven Renesslaer Barter was born in the first Carmel Community
Hospital with the loving help of his mother and the much-revered Dr.
Arnold Manor. Just seven days before his 57th birthday, Jeffrey passed
peacefully and calmly into the voyage now embracing him. This wonderful
talented son, brother, and friend embraced life to the fullest. He
deeply loved his family and friends and he had a wonderful closeness
with flora and fauna, leaving his mark with his beautiful paintings,
sculptures and poetry. He leaves his mother, Harriet Holman Barter, of
Carmel; son, Travis Landon Rensselaer Barter of Pacific Grove; sisters,
Laurie Stanley of Burlingame and Patricia Marsh and her husband, John,
of West Point, CA; his brother, Eric Barter and his wife, Janice, of
Eugene, Oregon; and his aunt, Mary Barter of Pacific Grove. Mary was
not only of the Barter family but also of the Holman Department Store
family where she was homeware and china buyer for many years. Along
with his family, Jeffrey leaves his dear friend and companion, David
Shoemaker of Cotati, CA. It was at David's home that Jeffrey passed
away peacefully and quietly under David's care and that of the
wonderful area Hospice. He was aware that his mother, sister, son and
Delaney were also with him. Jeffrey was preceded in death by his
sister, Nancy Joanne Barter, who died in 1953 at the age of 10; his
father, Arthur William Barter Jr.; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Arthur William Barter Sr.; his uncle, Noble Barter; his grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Rensslaer Holman; his aunt and uncle, Patricia
Holman O'Meara and Dr. Eugene O'Meara and their son, Peter O'Meara.
While still a pre-schooler, Jeffrey had his own vegetable garden. His
interest in nature was much more intense than that of the other
children. He attempted to show his classmates his onions, carrots and
radishes with much pride but they were more interested in the swing.
Both his grandfathers encouraged this early talent as they had
remarkably green thumbs. When he was a little older, Jeffrey 's dad
built a lath house for him where he grew beautiful fuchsias, which he
gave away, and sometimes sold, in the neighborhood. While attending
Lighthouse School, he was encouraged by the faculty to build a bird
sanctuary, feeders, trails and so forth for the children of other
Pacific Grove schools could come and observe. Jeffrey attended Pacific
Grove High School before transferring to Happy Valley School in Ojai
where his interest in arts and crafts developed greatly. He returned
from Ojai to attend Robert Louis Stevenson School. It was during this
time, that he wandered the dunes and woods near the family home and
wrote many of his poems which were later published in a book,
"Waiting for a Ripple." This book was published and illustrated as
a gift by Marlinda Van Russ of the Mendocino Coast. Next, his
adventurous life took him to the University of Wyoming in Laramie where
he joined a fellow RLS student, Larry Penfold, from Colorado. While
there Jeffrey increased his interest in painting and sculpting. Soon
the university asked him to donate pieces of his sculptures to the
school. After attending the University of Wyoming, Jeffrey returned to
Carmel and was encouraged by his friend, Derek Rayne, to raise St.
Bernards. He took one of them, Monk, to Europe to be in a movie with
Julie Christy and Bing Crosby. The movie was shelved leaving Jeffrey
and his assistant trainer, Bill Hayes, in Montreaux, Switzerland. There
they met a woman walking along the shores of Lake Geneva who took a
picture of Monk. Jeffrey quickly refused to allow her to use the
picture because he used the dog in advertising. She promptly explained
that she was the wife of a film director who was looking for just such
a dog. Hence, the movie "George" with Marshal Thompson of the
Doctari films. The video of this movie is still available. From the
adventures with Monk, Jeffrey moved to Cadeques, Spain, on the coast of
Brava. There he became a friend and neighbor of Salvador Dali. Also in
Cadeques, he met Margarita Peddinghaus, an artist from Gevelsberg,
Germany. She became his dearest friend and his German "mutter."
While he was in Germany, Jeffrey enjoyed tending her beautiful gardens
filled with magnificent life-size sculptures. His work continued in
Europe with many one-man exhibitions, which firmly established him as
an artist who interested many collectors. After ten years in Europe,
Jeffrey returned to the Monterey Peninsula where he soon met his
bride-to-be, Patricia Delaney. After they married, they moved to Low
Gap, the Holman family ranch in Mendocino where Jeffrey achieved one of
his lifelong goals, to restore, renovate and create a retreat for
family, friends and artistic endeavors. Jeffrey's cousin, Genie
O'Meara and her husband and children also relocated there to help in
the renovation of the property. Jeffrey's clientele increased in
Europe and the United States and required many visits to Europe. At
this time, the World Wildlife Federation commissioned a limited stamp
edition of Jeffrey's wildlife paintings. The Franklin Mint
commissioned another limited stamp collection of birds that were
extinct throughout the world. These were colorful times that included
dear friends from various media including music and the arts. Such
talents as the Coolidge family, Booker T, Bill Kreutzman, the Grateful
Dead and many more enhanced Jeffrey's true love of life. The arrival
of Jeffrey's son in the summer of 1980 was the answer to one of his
lifelong prayers. In 1984, Jeffrey and his wife and son returned to the
Monterey Peninsula to open a wildlife gallery in The Barnyard in
Carmel. Along with Jeffrey's work, the gallery featured other world
class wildlife artists including Ken Michaelson and J.D. Mayhew, among
others. Jeffrey returned to life at Low Gap, to nurture and complete
his dreams. The conservation-oriented film, Heartland, and the
Mendocino Music and Film Festival were focused projects for Jeffrey.
During holiday seasons, Jeffrey donated time and food to charities of
his choice. He cooked turkeys, decorated floor-to-ceiling Christmas
trees and was a dream comp-true to many children when he himself played
Santa Claus. Jeffrey embraced all of life. He was filled with the love
of his life, master craftsman, artist, intellect and father. He left a
wide swath of friendship that covers the globe. A Celebration of his
Life will be held at the Little Chapel by-the-Sea on Friday, May 24, at
2:00 under the direction of the Paul Mortuary.
